DiGi entry in mid-year may spark iPhone price war

By B.K. SIDHU

PETALING JAYA: The iPhone will be sold by DiGi.Com Bhd before mid-year and this could spark a price war on services and packages in the smartphone market.

The entry of DiGi in the iPhone space will also end Maxis Communications Bhd’s nearly one-year monopoly in the segment.

DiGi said yesterday it had reached an agreement with Apple Inc to distribute iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in Malaysia but the celco did not disclose when the packages for the iPhone will be launched.

DiGi said on its website that those already with an iPhone could switch to any of DiGi’s existing Postpaid/Prepaid rate plans.

That leaves Celcom Axiata Bhd, one of the three “big boys” in the local cellular industry, out of the iPhone race for now.

“We are open to the idea of selling iPhones,’’ Celcom Axiata chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly said yesterday. He said talks with Apple first began two years ago and the talks were still under way.

He did not give any indication on which way the talks would go but did admit that it was “not easy to sell the iPhones as we need to get a support system in place before we can do that. That is why we chose to focus on selling the Blackberry.’’

DiGi is excited about the deal with Apple as it expects the “three-year agreement will help DiGi increase sales more than 5% this year, higher than the industry average,’’ its chief executive officer Johan Dennelind told Bloomberg TV yesterday.

It recorded sales of 2% last year, slowing from 10% in 2008.

“The iPhone is fashionable and trendy. There is a large enough market out there still looking for reasonably priced packages to buy the phone. The determining factor, however, would be pricing,’’ according to a market source.

Maybank Investment Bank senior analyst Khair Mirza reckons that pricing of the device is fixed by Apple but DiGi’s ability to tap into the market will depend a lot on its positioning, “hype” and data plans.

Analyst do not expect DiGi to see a huge impact on its bottomline in the near term.

As for Maxis, the entry of DiGi appears to be a dampener as they now have to compete with DiGi, but the impact on earnings will be small, according to analysts.

Maxis declined to comment on queries from StarBiz on its iPhone sales and DiGi’s entry.

But market research company IDC claims that the celco last year sold 91,000 units since the launch in March 2009 and the shipments included both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. The iPhone is sold in 85 countries and has about 25,000 applications that can be downloaded.

A recent report released by Gartner said Apple iPhone’s sales had doubled in 2009 , with 24.9 million units sold in 2009 against 11.4 million units in 2008.

10 reasons to buy / upgrade Windows 7

Sunday, February 28th, 2010 | 1,271 views

Have you upgraded your windows? Still using Windows XP or Vista? It’s time fore Win7. Why Windows 7?

Windows 7

You told us to make Windows simpler to use, more responsive, and full of new possibilities. We listened—and made loads of improvements. Here’s our top 10:

1.) A better desktop. Windows 7 gets you around your PC faster than ever. The taskbar has bigger buttons and full-sized previews—and you can pin programs to it for one-click access. Jump Lists provide shortcuts to files, folders, and websites. And Snap, Peek, and Shake give you easy (and fun) new ways to juggle all those open windows.

2.)Smarter search. Type in the Start menu search box, and you’ll see results instantly, grouped by category—documents, pictures, music, e‑mail, and programs. Search in a folder or library, and you can fine-tune your search with filters like date or file type—and use the preview pane to peek at the contents of your results.

3.) Easy sharing with HomeGroup. Sharing files and printers on your home network should be simple. With HomeGroup, it finally is. Connect two or more PCs running Windows 7, and with a minimum of fuss you can start sharing music, pictures, videos, and documents with other people in your home.

4.) Built for speed. Windows 7 has key performance improvements to take up less memory and run background services only when you need them. It’s designed to run your programs faster and to sleep, resume, and reconnect to wireless networks quicker. And with 64-bit support, you can take full advantage of the latest in powerful 64-bit PCs.

5.) Better wireless networking. Connecting to wireless networks on your laptop—formerly a bit of a hassle—now takes just a couple of clicks. Choose from the list of available networks in the taskbar, click one, and then connect. Once you’ve connected to a network, Windows will remember it so you can connect again later automatically.

6.) Windows Touch. Use your fingers to browse the web, flip through photos, and open files and folders on a touchscreen PC—for the first time, Windows includes true multitouch technology. With gestures for zooming, rotating, and even right-clicking, it’s a whole new way to work with your PC.

7.) Plays well with devices. Device Stage, a new feature in Windows 7, works like a home page for things like portable music players, smartphones, and printers. When you plug a compatible device into your PC, you’ll see a menu with information and popular tasks like battery life, how many photos are ready to be downloaded, and printing options.

8.) Media streaming. With new features in Windows Media Player 12, you can enjoy your media library around the house—or around town. Play To lets you stream music, videos, and photos from your PC to your stereo or TV (you may need additional hardware). And with Remote Media Streaming, you can even stream media over the Internet from one computer running Windows 7 to another that’s miles away.

9.) TV and movies on your PC. With Windows Media Center and a TV tuner, your PC becomes a digital video recorder you can use to watch, pause, and record live television. Plus, Windows Media Center now supports more global TV standards, including digital and HD, and plays more audio and video formats than ever before.

10.) Nag-free notifications. Action Center, new in Windows 7, puts you in control of maintenance and security messages. You can turn notifications on or off for things like Windows Defender or User Account Control. If Windows needs your attention, you’ll see a notification on the far right of the taskbar. Click it, and you’ll get suggested fixes for any problems.

BlackBerry users hit by outage

Thursday, December 24th, 2009 | 726 views

BlackBerry outage

Hmm I was wondering why my BlackBerry constantly connected and disconnected from the network and most of the time only I could get “edge” in small cap instead of “EDGE” big cap. When you see “EDGE” meaning you are connected to the network and able to send / receive emails and surf and IM or twitter. Arghhh, what happened to Research in Motion – RIM?

I have been searching high and low and found some source said it’s North America, but how come I can’t be connected to “EDGE” and affected? I’m not sure whether my case is related or not, but I don’t see any other BlackBerry users complaining about it?? Are you are BlackBerry user? Can you confirm whether is there any outage these few days? It’s really driving my crazyyyy….!

BlackBerry users hit by eight-hour outage

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

* BlackBerry didn’t give reason for outage, which ended around 2:45 a.m. ET
* At one point, 100% of North American customers were affected
* A similar outage hit BlackBerry system last week
* Research in Motion says it has about 32 million global BlackBerry subscribers

(CNN) — BlackBerry customers throughout North America were without e-mail and Internet services for more than eight hours after a widespread outage that lasted until early Wednesday.

Customers began receiving e-mails again around 2:45 a.m. ET. Initial reports of outages came from BlackBerry around 6:30 p.m.

BlackBerry did not give a reason for the outage. It was the second such outage for users in less than a week.

At one point, BlackBerry estimated 100 percent of its customers in North America were affected by the outage, according to an e-mail sent to customers.

“BlackBerry subscribers may be unable to send or receive messages. Subscribers may also be unable to register their device, roam in another location, or use other services such as Internet browsing,” the e-mail said.

“BlackBerry Internet Service subscribers may be unable to use the BlackBerry Internet Service web site or perform activities such as creating new accounts, integrating third-party email accounts, or viewing email attachments.”

Research in Motion Ltd., maker of the devices, said it had about 32 million global BlackBerry subscribers as of the end of August.

BlackBerry phones run on multiple wireless carriers, including AT&T, Sprint Nextel and Verizon.

Finally I have claimed my prize from Canon! This is the prize that I won myself from Canon Photo Marathon 2009.

“This annual photo marathon has created history each year as not only has it managed to gather photo enthusiasts around the country in one venue but it also helps in creating a binding tie among photography lovers through a competitive experience regardless of race and culture,” said Mr. Simon Wong, Assistant Director of Canon Marketing (Malaysia).

Renowned names from the photography industry were there to judge the hundred of participation and find the shining stars. The panel of judges included (Mr Sean Soh of Sean Studio, En Zainal Abd. Halim of Reuters Malaysia, Mr Joe Chan of Pro Kit, Mr Ng Kok Leong of The Star, Mr Peter Tan of Peter Tan Photography & Mr Zung of The Photoz). Judging was based on creativity in theme interpretation, use of colors, light / shadows, composition of photograph, and relevance to the theme given in the marathon.

Never expected to win anything but merely luck and I guess maybe there’s something different. I did a twist on the lense for the effect. So am I creative? It’s worth RM 1,000.00 Thanks!

Search Engine Optimization May Not Be As Hard As You Think

Monday, August 24th, 2009 | 828 views

Do you know what’s SEO and how important is SEO? If you interested read more below and you may think that SEO is actually not a difficult thing to do =)

If your SEO is good then you will rank in 1st page in google search engine. If you want SEO service, I could offer you that. If not read the article below for your knowledge.

Being found on page one of the major search engines is one of the number one marketing techniques you can use.

It’s all about bringing targeted traffic and visitors to your site for your niche. Not only that but it is often one of the least costly kinds of advertising even if you hire an expert to do it for you.

For example a Toronto search engine optimization company may charge a few hundred dollars a month for their services. In comparison you would easily spend upwards of a thousand dollars trying to get similar results from paper ads. And optimizing your site can give it much a broader exposure.

You don’t always need to hire an expert because you can do a number of things yourself if you are willing to put in the effort.

Before you even begin to optimize your site you need to think about which keywords you wish to rank for.

Think like a customer to discover keywords phrases they might use to find a similar product or service. The more you can think of the better. These may then be plugged into on-line tools like Google’s keyword research tool or on sites such as Wordtracker or Wordze.

These sites can give you an estimate on how often these terms are searched for. If you find some terms that have a great number of monthly searches then it is a good indication that being on page one for that phrase could equal a large number of site visitors.

Remember that frequently the keyword phrases with the most amount of searches are often the most competitive also. That does not mean that you can never rank for them, only that it may take quite a lot of time.

A good strategy is to select a mix of difficult and easy to optimize terms. This will help get you a short term and long term focus.

The content contained on the pages of your site should be your next focus.

Try to use your chosen keywords into the various web pages. Despite the fact that one of the reasons for using your keywords in your site is for the search engines don’t forget that actual visitors will be viewing it.

The greater the number of pages you can add to your site the better. Every time you add new content you are attracting the search engines to frequently return and reindex your web site. This can increase the chances of getting you to page one for many more terms than the ones you are specifically focusing on.

Finally comes what is definitely the most critcal part. Every time another site points to your web site you are one step closer to being on page one. That does not mean getting just any kind of link from any site. They need to be from sites that are of the same theme to yours.

For example if your site is real estate oriented site then you will need to have a real estate search engine optimization strategy. This may include getting links from various real estate agent sites, blogs, or anything related to that topic. You should be more concerned with quality, not just quantity.

One of the premier ways to accomplish this is with article marketing. You create content in the form of articles. These can then be submitted to various directories for inclusion like Article Alley. Your site will get a link pointing back to it in return for handing out free content. This is step you should be doing a minimum of once a week.

You will slowly begin to see your site’s traffic and ranking soar. The greater the time period you optimize your site for the better your results will be. It could take some time and work however it is well worth it.

P1 W1MAX Wiggy Signal Coverage Still Not Wide Enough

Saturday, June 13th, 2009 | 1,695 views

I have been using P1 W1MAX since few months back but my house is still no coverage till now even I wrote to them and also submitted the coverage suggestion but till now still no news.

I used the “Am I In Coverage” to search but seems that few road down my house have the coverage but I’m just not in luck. Any chance for them to extend another road to include me in the coverage so that I could enjoy the fun with P1 W1MAX? =(

P1 W1MAX Coverage

P1 W1MAX Coverage

P1 W1MAX Coverage

P1 W1MAX please cover up more area before you expand to other state! If not it’s not very portable as compared to other 3G broadband like Maxis, Digi and Celcom which the coverage is much much wider! Keep it up P1 and I’m confident that you could do it! Why ppl subscribe to P1 W1MAX or other 3G broadband? This is because they want the mobility and if not why in the first place they will subscribe to these service right?

So work on the signal coverage to cover a wider area that supposed wimax could handle and enhance the quality of the speed too and make sure the price is competitive in order to survive in this competitive service. Demand is here but we must make sure the supply is good enough to take care of everyone of the subscriber. =)

Now you can even check your P1 W1MAX coverage thru your phone! Check this if necessary because they did not state the charges of using that service, so do not complain to me later they charge you because of using that =p

Step 1:
Type P1Block NoStreetNameCityPostcode
E.g.: P1 10, Jalan 2/23D,Setapak,53000

Step 2: Send the SMS to 36660.

Step 3: You’ll receive an SMS reply on whether or not your area is in P1 W1MAX coverage.
