Badminton: Agonisingly close Fairuz and Zakry go down fighting in HK final

Monday, December 1st, 2008 | 17 Views

It was a good fight with the Korean but I think Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari still need to be more consistent and more training! They could have won the Championship, Malaysia Boleh!

KUALA LUMPUR: Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari let slip the chance to become the country’s most successful shuttlers in Super Series tournaments this year when they narrowly lost in the final of the Hong Kong Open yesterday.

Zakry-Fairuzizuan were beaten 23-25, 21-19, 20-22 by South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung after putting up a tenacious fight in an nail-biting one-hour final match.

If not for several sloppy and poor returns in the crucial stage, Zakry-Fairuzizuan could have trooped out with their third Super Series title this season after the back-to-back win in Singapore and Indonesia in June.

The Hong Kong Open is the 12th and final leg of the Super Series this season and one other Malaysian shuttler won two titles this year — world number one Lee Chong Wei in the men’s singles of the Malaysia and Singapore Opens.

Fairuzizuan was happy that they were able to give the more fancied Koreans a run for their money.

The victors: The South Korean pair of Jung Jae-sung (left) and Lee Yong-dae defeated Mohd Fairuzizuan and Mohd Zakry 25-23, 19-21, 22-20 in the final of the Hong Kong Open yesterday

“We are aware that they are fast and deadly in their attacks. Instead of lifting the shuttle, we kept it low. Our tactic worked and we were able to keep pace with them,” said Fairuzizuan in a telephone interview.

“In the past, we had difficulty returning their attacks but this time, we managed to make them sweat on several occasions. But at the end, we put ourselves in trouble. In our excitement to win, we made several mistakes.”

Fairuzizuan, however, chose to look at the bright side.

“This is our best performance after a long time. We needed this to boost our morale. At least, we know that we have what it takes to give the top players a good fight,” he said.

“Now we must try to be consistent. It will be good if we can reach at least the quarter-finals in all other future tournaments.”

Zakry, however, was frustrated over the narrow defeat.

“It’s frustrating to make silly mistakes when it mattered most. Our coach (Rexy Mainaky) was calling out for us to relax and play a more patient game. But we lost control towards the end,” he said.

“But this defeat has fuelled the fire in me to go all out at the Super Series Masters Finals (in Kota Kinabalu from Dec 18-21). It will be our last tournament this year and we want to win it.”

The Finals feature eight pairs and Zakry-Fairuzizuan qualified as the second ranked combination in the Series standings.

Meanwhile, China’s badminton couple, Lin Dan and Xie Xingfang, both lost in the final. Lin Dan was beaten 9-21, 21-9, 17-21 by compatriot Chen Jin while Xingfang fell to a 16-21, 21-10, 10-21 defeat by Wang Chen of Hong Kong.

Rexy: Duo are serious contenders at Masters Finals

KUALA LUMPUR: The fighting displays of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif in the Hong Kong Open yesterday has brought back the smile on the face of national doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky.

And Rexy believes that the duo can do even better at the Super Series Masters Finals, which will be held in Kota Kinabalu from Dec 18-21.

Yesterday, Fairuzizuan-Zakry put up a great fight before losing 23-25, 21-19, 20-22 to South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung in a thrilling final that lasted for an hour.

Rexy

Despite the defeat, Fairuzizuan-Zakry showed that they were back in form after going through a slump over the last five months.

There had been no outstanding results since winning back-to-back Open titles in Singapore and Indonesia in June.

Rexy said that they could have won the title but for Zakry’s poor shots in the crucial stages of the rubber game.

“Zakry realised his mistakes. He took a risk with fancy strokes and they cost the pair dearly, especially when they were leading 16-14,” said Rexy in a telephone interview.

“They should have kept the rally going. Yong-dae was tired and they failed to take advantage of it. On top of that, luck was also not on their side.”

But Rexy was happy that the duo held the Koreans by their throats.

“It was nice to see Fairuzizuan and Zakry getting back their rhythm. It should motivate them to do even better against all the established pairs,” he said.

“I think, they will challenge strongly for the title at the Super Series Masters Finals. But they must not take it easy in training when they get back home. They must continue to work hard.”

Badminton: Kien Keat-Boon Heong stun Olympic champions for semis spot @ Hong Kong Open

Hong Kong Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong finally rose to the occasion to reach the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open with a stunning win over reigning Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia.

Yesterday, the duo blew away the top seeds and world No. 1 Markis-Hendra 21-11, 21-17 in just 21 minutes in the quarter-finals.

With the win, Kien Keat-Boon Heong have avenged their defeats to the Indonesians in the last two tournaments — the Beijing Games and French Open.

The Malaysians’ tame defeats in those two tournaments had raised doubts about their status as the country’s top pair.

Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong
Power pair: Koo Kien Keat (right) and Tan Boon Heong finally struck form by beating Indonesia’s Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan to reach the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open Friday.

Today, the Macau Open champions will take on compatriots Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari, thus assuring Malaysia of at least a place in the final.

Zakry-Fairuzizuan, who are determined to regain their winning touch in the Super Series, defeated South Koreans Cho Gun-woo-Yoo Yeon-seong 21-16, 12-21, 21-15 in the other quarter-final.

The duo’s form suffered a dip after the back-to-back Super Series wins in Singapore and Indonesia in June.

But yesterday, the show-stealers were definitely Kien Keat-Boon Heong, who have now virtually confirmed their place in the Super Series Masters Finals, which will be held in Kota Kinabalu from Dec 18-21.

National coach Rexy Mainaky said that there were positive vibes from both his players.

“I think the key to their win today (yesterday) was their positive approach throughout the game. Every shot was taken with confidence. They tried their best to enjoy the game,” said Rexy in a telephone interview.

“The Malaysians have lost to the Indonesians in the last two tournaments (out of eight meetings). But I think this was their best win against them. They were able to control the game and force their opponents to make mistakes.”

Rexy, however, noted that Markis had placed an ice-pack on his knee after the defeat.

“It looked as though that Markis was not in his best condition. But, having said that, I suppose they (Markis and Kido) would not have competed here if they were not fully fit,” he said.

Kien Keat, however, failed to make the semi-finals of the mixed doubles event with partner Ng Hui Lin when they crashed 18-21, 12-21 to China’s Zheng Bo-Ma Jin.

Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair of Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty continued their fine run in international tournaments when they checked into the semi-finals with a convincing 21-14, 21-15 win over Denmark’s Kamilla Rytter Juhl-Lena Frier Kristiansen.

The duo will take on China’s Zhang Yawen-Zhao Tingting today.

Koo Kien Kiat / Tan Boon Heong vs Markis Kido / Hendra Setiawan- Badminton Beijing Olympic 2008 Result

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 | 534 Views

THE Malaysian challenge for an Olympic medal from badminton has been whittled down to just one contender following the exits of Wong Mew Choo and the men’s pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong at the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium last night.

And Lee Chong Wei will shoulder the responsibility of keeping the Malaysian hopes alive when he takes on Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro today for a place in the men’s singles semi-finals.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong were beaten 16-21, 18-21 by Indonesian world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan in the quarter-finals.

Koo Kien Kiat & Tan Boon Heong
Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat (right) and Tan Boon Heong in action during their loss to Indonesia’s Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The Malaysian duo had showed solid form in their opening match win over Japan’s Shuichi Sakamoto-Shintaro Ikeda on Tuesday.

But they lacked the aggression needed to beat the top seeded Markis-Hendra.

The Indonesians were solid in defence and led all the way to take the first game 21-16.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong offered a bit of resistance when they led briefly at 14-11 in the second game but had no answers when the Indonesians turned on the style.

Markis-Hendra regained the lead at 18-17 and never looked back to win the match.

It was the first time in six meetings that Kien Keat-Boon Heong lost to the Indonesian pair.

Kien Keat conceded that the Indonesians were outstanding in defence and it was hard to break their rhythm.

“They have become familiar with how we play since we beat them in the 2006 Doha Asian Games. They know our weak points. We could not get our game going even we tried to come back,” he said.

Boon Heong offered no excuses for the defeat and said: “The Indonesians controlled well but we also did not play our best game tonight.”

Hendra said that they knew the Malaysian pair would be difficult to beat and it was a matter of them going in for the kill first.

“We have to start attacking. We were also under no pressure because we have not beaten them before. That helped us a lot. Now, we have a chance to win the gold and we will go all out to get it,” he said.

Markis-Hendra, who have the chance to follow in the footsteps of fellow Indonesians Rexy Mainaky-Ricky Subagja (Atlanta 1996) and Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan (Sydney 2000), will play against Danish veterans Jonas Rasmussen-Lars Paaske for a place in the final.

The Danes, who sent the top Korean pair of Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung packing in the first round, came from behind to beat Poland’s Michal Logosz-Robert Mateusiak 17-21, 21-11, 21-15 in the quarter-finals.

China’s golden hope Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun advanced to the semi-finals with an easy 21-9, 21-10 win over Americans Howard Bach-Bob Malaythong.

The second seeded Chinese pair will be up against Jae-jin-Ji-man, who beat Tadashi Ohtsuka-Keita Masuda of Japan 21-12, 18-21, 21-9.

Koo Kien Kiat / Tan Boon Heong vs Markis Kido / Hendra Setiawan- Badminton Beijing Olympic 2008 Result

Malaysian performance is this 2008 Beijing Olympic Badminton is not as good as what the rest of the world think. I think Koo Kien Kiat and Tan Boon Heong today played badly. Their understanding between each other does not exist and they keep on fighting for the shuttle and let the opponent have the chance to kill them. Running and positioning is very important and I think the Malaysian have to work harder on that.

KKK and TBH did not attack much in these 2 games but the opponent keep on attacking because the Malaysian keep giving chance to them. KKK and TBH made a lot of mistake and mistake during serving too. Very sad and disappointed over the performance and result.

It’s sad that now we only left Lee Chong Wei in the run of getting a medal in Beijing Olympic. Hopefully Lee Chong Wei able to make it tomorrow 14 August, 11.30am, Channel 821 on Astro Super Sport, Stadium Astro.

Malaysia Wong Mew Choo vs China Lu Lan - Badminton Beijing Olympic 2008 Result

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 | 793 Views

WONG Mew Choo had only herself to blame for letting slip the chance to get into the medals playoff of the women’s singles badminton competition at the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium last night.

She held a total of nine game points in the second game of her quarter-final match against Lu Lan but was unable to force the Chinese third seed to a rubber game and lost the match 7-21, 27-29.

Mew Choo, who was the first Malaysian woman to qualify for an Olympic quarter-final, had no answer to the Lu Lan’s aggression in the first game and conceded defeat in 14 minutes.

Wong Mew Choo
Wong Mew Choo takes a tumble during her quarter-final match against China’s Lu Lan on Wednesday. Mew Choo lost 7-21, 27-29.

But it was a different Mew Choo as she forced herself back in contention in the next game.

She caught up with Lu Lan at 8-8 and held game point at 20-15. But she could not close the game, allowing her rival to win five straight points to force deuce.

The battle continued but it was not to be Mew Choo’s night. She bowed out in straight games and there will be an all-China semi-final between Lu Lan and top seed Xie Xingfang, who beat Xu Huaiwen of Germany 21-19, 22-20.

The other semi-final is between defending champion Zhang Ning of China and Indonesian Maria Kristin Yulianti.

Zhang Ning slogged for 66 minutes to beat Pi Hongyan of France 21-8, 19-21, 21-19 while Maria, who ousted Danish contender Tine Rasmussen in the early round, chalked up a 26-28, 21-14, 21-15 win over India’s Saina Nehwal.

Mew Choo rued her missed chances in the crucial moments (leading 20-15).

“I was not certain where to place the shuttle at that time. My heart was in the game but my arms could not respond. Lu Lan caught up and gained confidence. I tried but could not nail that one point,” said the eighth seeded Mew Choo, who was featuring in her first Olympics.

“It’s disappointing but I am satisfied with my outing in Beijing. My objective was to reach the quarter-finals and I did it.”

Wong Mew Choo Lost to Lu Lan in Badminton Women’s Singles Quarterfinal 2, Beijing Olympic. Lu Lan won!

Wong Mew Choo

Malaysia Wong Mew Choo vs China Lu Lan - Badminton Beijing Olympic 2008 Statistic

Malaysian Wong Mew Choo’s Beijing Olympics’ dream came to an end.

The national number one women’s singles shuttler lost 7-12, 25-27 in the quarter-finals to third seeded Lu Lan from China.

It was a sad end to Mew Choo’s run in Beijing although she had already made history by becoming the first Malaysian woman’s singles to qualify for the Olympics.

When I watching the second match, nearly heart attack. But what a waste for Wong Mew Choo, I was hoping can see for another match by both of the players. Really nice game.

More updates on Koo Kian Keat / Tan Boon Heong Men’s Doubles Quarterfinal 1 and Lee Chong Wei Men’s Singles Quarterfinal 4 later. Hopefully this time Malaysian can make it. Malaysia Boleh.

Wong Pei Tty / Chin Eei Hui Runner Up In SCG THAILAND GRAND PRIX GOLD 2008

Monday, June 30th, 2008 | 351 Views

Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui

Malaysia’s top women doubles shuttlers Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui received a timely boost ahead of the Beijing Olympic Games when they powered into the final of the Thailand Open in Bangkok today but their experience and teamwork is still not the best to beat China’s Yang Wei-Zhang Jiewen, whom they have never beaten in nine meetings.

Although in the opening game, Wong Pei Tty / Chin Eei Hui performed very well and beat Yang Wei-Zhang Jiewen 15-21, but it was not their luck to win the 2nd and rubber set in this SCG Thailand Badminton Grand Prix Gold 2008. They lost their confidence and did not perform very well, everyone expect to see a big win by the underdog but they did not make it in the second and rubber game. They lost 21-13 in second game and 21-13 in the rubber game.

Hope they will gain enough experience and knowledge and partnership for their coming game and Olympic which is just 40days away.

In the men’s double and men’s single Malaysia did not qualified for final as we did not send our top players to compete in this Thailand Open.

Final Results
Men’s Single won by China’s Lin Dan 17-21, 21-15, 21-13 against Thailand, Boonsak PONSANA

Women’s Single won by China’s Xie Xingfang 26-24, 21-7 against own team mate, Lu Lan

Men’s Double won by China’s Chai Yun / Fu Haifeng 21-17, Retired against own team mate Guo Zhendong / Xie Zhongbo

Women’s Double won by Yang Wei / Zhang Jiewen 15-21, 21-13, 21-13 against Malaysia’s Wong Pei Tty / Chin Eei Hui

Mix Double won by China’s Xie Zhongbo / Yawen ZHANG 23-25, 21-10, 23-21 against He Hanbin / Yang (F) YU

What I can say is All the title was sapu by China as most of the matches is China vs China. If Malaysia were to sent out all the top players like Lee Chong Wei, Wong Mew Choo, Khoo Kien Kiat / Tan Boon Heong, we should be in final and maybe getting the cup? Malaysia Boleh!

Coach Pang happy with Eei Hui-Pei Tty despite final loss

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty did not win at the Thailand Open yesterday but as far as coach Pang Cheh Chang is concerned, the duo succeeded in their task to forge a better understanding ahead of the Beijing Olympics in August.

A first Open title continued to elude the top Malaysian women’s pair, going down 21-15, 13-21, 13-21 to Zhang Jiewen-Yang Wei of China in a 49-minute final. But they did a creditable job to take the first game off the top seeds.

Despite the defeat, Cheh Chang said that Eei Hui-Pei Tty certainly lifted their spirits ahead of the Beijing Games with their performance in the Thailand Open.

“This was their third back-to-back tournament. They competed but struggled in Singapore and Indonesia,” he said in a telephone interview from Bangkok yesterday.

“The reason we listed them for the Thailand Open was for them to find the missing link in their partnership. They found their rhythm here. Taking one game off the world number one today will give them the confidence to take on the world’s best.”

Eei Hui-Pei Tty will resume work to prepare for the Olympics after a three-day break. Eei Hui will be undergoing treatment for knee pains, which hampered her performance yesterday.

Thomas Cup Semi Final Result - Malaysia vs China 3 - 2
Malaysia Lost!

Lee Chong Wei and our second double Zakry Abdul Latif Mohd and Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari Mohddid a great job! They both beat Zhongbo Xie and Zhendong Guo in straight set. 17-21, 15-21. I was disappointed with Koo Kian Keat / Tan Boon Heong double pair and Hafiz Hashim too. They should score a point for Malaysia. Once again after 16years Malaysai still cannot get back the Thomas Cup =(

Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and Mohd Zakry were short in comparison to the towering Xie Zhongbo and Guo Zhengdong.

Hafiz Hashim Lost to Chen Jin

I purposely took leave to watch this 4years once Thomas Cup and support Malaysia but it really disappoint me. Hafiz Hashim should have perform much better, he was leading in both games but in the end he lost concentration and focus. He should run more and play seriously. I feel like he was slacking and just play for fun! That’s bad!

Lee Wan Wah and Choong Tan Fook Thomas Cup

Just finished the match between Malaysian Team and Korean Team. It’s no fun at all. Korean reshuffle their line up for singles and double just to avoid Chian in quarter final. Is there any sportsmanship there? We Malaysian are all geared up to beat Korean. Malaysia won 4-1. It’s no fun seeing double player playing single against us and it’s really not sporting at all in the arrangement. We just won them easily. Now Malaysia are top of the group. Hopefully we can take back the Cup as the last we won Thomas cup is 16years ago!
