Wong Chi Kei Noodle & Congee Restaurant (黃枝記) @ Senado Square
Upon arrival at Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal, we took a bus to Senado Square 議事亭前地 and from there we explored the historic city by foot. If you want to try your luck gambling, you can always board one of their complimentary Luxury air-conditioned coaches which will shuttle you to Sands Macao or The Venetian Macao.
Our first stop was Wong Chi Kei Noodle & Congee Restaurant 黃枝記 which is located on the left side of Senado Square. The wait was quite a while as the restaurant was fully packed. Similar to Hong Kong, table sharing is very common in Macao. Since there were just the two of us, we had to share a table with strangers.
Wong Chi Kei Noodle & Congee Restaurant 黃枝記 is very popular both among locals and tourists. Besides Chinese, their menu items are also written in English, catering to tourists.
Deep Fried Wonton (酥炸雲吞)
The deep fried wanton is served with sweet sauce for dipping. The size of these wontons are huge (around the size of a women’s fist) and its definitely not made with the normal wonton skin. The skin is crispy with a mixture of shrimp and pork fillings. Addictive stuff. And no, it’s not oily 😉 Just make sure to eat it while its hot so that it won’t turn soft.
Wonton in Soup 雲吞
The wontons are quite good – filled with generous shrimp and pork filling.
Shrimp Roe Noodles or known as ‘Har Ji Meen’ (蝦仔麵)
This small plate of homemade egg noodles is topped with generous dried shrimp roe. It’s my first time trying this so I’m quite excited as I’ve heard so much about this famous shrimp roe noodle. The noodles were thin and springy but I find it tad dry. The shrimp roe taste a bit like belacan but I seriously think our local belacan taste much better and more fragrant. This is most probably my first and my last time trying the shrimp roe noodles. Just don’t know how to appreciate the taste!
Verdict: Located on the left side of Senado Square, Wong Chi Kei is a famous restaurant serving authentic Cantonese and Macauese cuisine. Some of their signature dishes include deep fried wontons, shrimp roe noodles, fresh crab congee, wonton noodles in soup and etc. Give the shrimp roe noodles a try if you haven’t tried before but the crispy fried wonton is a must-order. Oh, the crab congee looks good too!
Ruins of St. Paul’s 大三巴牌坊, there are rows of shops selling local delicacies and souvenirs. This place is truly a shopping paradise!” />
Ruins of St. Paul’s 大三巴牌坊 is just a 5 minutes walk from Senado Square. Along the way to Ruins of St. Paul’s 大三巴牌坊, there are rows of shops selling local delicacies and souvenirs. This place is truly a shopping paradise!
I noticed Pastelaria Koi Kei 澳門鉅記手信 has many outlets in Macau. Just along the street to Ruins of St. Paul’s itself, I passed by several Koi Kei outlets selling local delicacies like almond biscuits, egg rolls, peanut candy, Portugese egg tart, beef & pork jerky and etc. They are also very generous in giving out free samples of their products for you to try.
Remember the TVB drama “Brother’s Keeper” or “巨輪”? I found the cart stall which Lo Wai-son (羅威信) used to sell his peanut candy.
The varieties of beef & pork jerky at Koi Kei Bakery. The jerky taste pretty similar to bak kwa or also known as 肉干 sold in Malaysia and Singapore. Oh, I came across a few Bee Cheng Hiang outlets in Macao and the queue was surprisingly long.
Ruins of St. Paul’s 大三巴牌坊 are one of Macau’s most famous landmarks. The area was crowded with tourists which makes it difficult to take a good photo. Gotta adjust the best angle and best time to snap a photo without too many photo-bombers 😉
