Looking for a perfect family holiday in Malaysia? If you ask me, I would suggest Penang, Ipoh, Malacca or Johor. After staying home for a few months ever since MCO started in March, I decided to bring the kids for a short getaway to Ipoh. Why Ipoh? There are so many things to do, see and eat in Ipoh (怡保).
If you’re looking for fun things to do in Ipoh, you may want to visit Lost World of Tambun. I brought my kids to the theme park during one of the school holidays and we had lots of fun there.
Where to stay in Ipoh? I’ve stayed at Sunway Lost World Hotel, Ipoh Bali Hotel and Weil Hotel. If you’re visiting Lost World of Tambun, I would suggest you to stay at Sunway Lost World Hotel as the theme park is just opposite the hotel. If you’re planning to visit Ipoh city, both Ipoh Bali Hotel and Weil Hotel are good. Ipoh Bali Hotel is a Bali-themed hotel while Weil Hotel is a modern hotel next to Ipoh Parade.
With so many best breakfast spots in Ipoh, you’ll be spoilt for choices. This trip, we decided to try out the famous Dry Curry Chicken Mee at Restoran Moon de Moon (满中满美食馆) in Kampung Simee, Ipoh. Besides dry curry chicken mee, this stall is also famous for their ‘Kai Si Hor Fun’ or known as Chicken Shredded Kway Teow Soup.
As you can see from my photo, the curry is deliciously rich and thick with a nice santan fragrance. It’s not spicy at all for me and if you’re a big fan of curry noodles, it’s worth trying.
Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of Kai Si Hor Fun (鸡丝河粉) or Curry Mee because there are other stalls selling Chee Cheong Fun (猪肠粉), wanton mee, fried rice and noodles but I noticed most tables ordered either the dry curry chicken mee or kai si hor fun.
After breakfast, we walked over to Hong Kee Confectionery (鸿记饼家) to buy their famous Sak Keh Ma (萨骑马) – a type of egg flour biscuit. Hong Kee Confectionery (鸿记饼家) is famous for their egg tarts, but I personally prefer their Sak Keh Ma ‘萨骑马’ which I thought is one of the best that I had. It’s crispy with a nice eggy flavor. It’s tad sweet but the sweetness won’t make you feel jelak instead it entices you to eat more. Good to go with green tea or if coffee, have it black to balance the sweetness. Besides egg tart, they also sell various pastries like kai sou, Hup Tou Sou and coconut tart. If you’re in the town area, you could actually get these pastries from their stall at Kedai Kopi Weng Seng (永成茶餐室), a corner shop at Jalan Cockman (Jalan Dato Onn Jaafar).
When in Ipoh, it’s about eating, eating and eating. There are so many good food choices in Ipoh. One of my must haves in Ipoh is coffee. I love the coffee at Restoran Xin Xiang Er Nong (新香而浓) at Jalan Tokong in Taman Hoover, Ipoh. The Char Koay Teow with duck egg is quite good too.
It’s no longer a secret that Gunung Rapat (昆仑喇叭) is famous for Heong Peah (香餅). I’ve tried 189 & Seng Kee heong peah, this round I’m trying 362 Heong Peah instead. The heong peah is crispy and flaky. It makes great souvenirs for family and friends. The Chang Jian Coffee Kaw Kaw is good and you can get it at Shopee too!
Since we are at Gunung Rapat, might as well try the Yong Tau Fu at Kedai Kopi Kwong Hong (廣豐茶室) in Gunung Rapat. The place was packed with locals having lunch. There are many types of yong liu available, such as mushroom, broccoli, capsicum, choy sum stuffed with fish paste.
Since the kids wanted dai chow (大炒) for dinner, we decided to dine at Restaurant Wah Xing (华兴饭店) located in Taman Boon Bak, Ipoh. Ordered Sweet & Sour Pork, Tofu with Minced Pork, Signature Pork Ribs and 4 Heavenly King.
Wanted to grab some coconut buns from the famous Ban Guan Foong Bakery (怡保兵如港万源丰面包厂) for dessert but sadly it was all sold out. They started selling their breads earlier at 5pm instead of 6pm due to RMCO (Restricted Movement Control Order).
Despite the hot weather, you will see a long queue formed outside Ming Yue Confectionery (明裕食品). When it’s not the Mid-Autumn Festival, people queue to buy their sesame peanut candy. Ming Yue Confectionery’s peanut candy is made famous by Hong Kong actor, Chapman To (杜汶澤) when he filmed the popular travelling show, Pick Me Up To Malaysia (走佬去马拉).
You can also buy famous Ipoh Peanut Candy from 新荣辉花生糖 in Lazada now. Don’t need to queue for hours! 🙂
Bought some agar-agar mooncake from Aunty Lee Cake & Pastries at Jalan Chung Ah Ming. There are assorted flavors in a box such as cendol, red bean, corn, yam, coffee and sweet potato. Not too sweet and tastes quite good.
As MCO was lifted and replaced with RMCO, we decided to take the kids to Ipoh for a Cuti-Cuti Malaysia holiday. It’s been a while since we traveled for holidays due to COVID-19. I had a fun and memorable Ipoh trip with my kids eating various delicious food and spending quality time together.
