Pictorial health warnings on cigarette packs by Jan 1

Sunday, November 9th, 2008 5,521 views

Tobacco packaging warning messages are health warning messages that appear on the packaging of cigarettes and other tobacco products. They have been implemented in an effort to enhance the public’s knowledge about the dangers of smoking. In general, warnings used in different countries try to emphasize the same messages. Warnings for some countries are listed below. Such warnings have been commonplace in tobacco advertising for many years. more details

This is what we have in Malaysia now “AMARAN OLEH KERAJAAN MALAYSIA, MEROKOK MEMBAHAYAKAN KESIHATAN (Warning by the government of Malaysia, Smoking endangers health)” and seems no body cares about it and still so many smokers out there. So now government is taking more steps against smokers by adding some gross picture of the effect of smoking so that the smokers will quite smoking hopefully? Does it really works? I don’t think the smokers care about it. =)

PUTRAJAYA: Cigarette packs must carry pictorial health warnings by Jan 1 in the Government’s latest blitz against smokers.

Besides these warnings, the Health Ministry has also embarked on a series of moves targeting smokers including setting a minimum RM6 for a 20-cigarette pack by year-end, extending the list of non-smoking premises, and banning manufacturers from using words such as “low tar”, “light”, “ultra-light” and “mild” in their brand packaging with immediate effect.

Its minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said 21 cigarette manufacturers and importers in the country had agreed to this latest ruling.

“By Jan 1, each cigarette brand must have at least two of its products carry these warnings. However, there may still be old stock in the country with the old packaging.

“By next June, all cigarette packs must carry the warnings. Besides these warnings, the packs must print on the side an advisory against selling cigarettes to those aged 18 years and below, and the warning that cigarette smoke contains 4,000 types of chemicals,” he told reporters Wednesday at his office here.

There are six sets of pictorial warnings, advising people against smoking by featuring graphic images of mouth cancer, throat cancer and deformed foetuses. There is also an infoline number for smokers who wish to give up smoking.

The pictures on the front of the cigarette packs must cover 40% of the surface, while the ones shown on the back must be 60% in size.

In a survey by the ministry, 21.5% of the adult population or three million adults smoke and among teenagers, some 15% have indicated they have tried smoking and another 8% confessed to being regular smokers.

Liow said with this latest ruling, Malaysia joins another 15 countries which have complied with the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

“In Canada, these warnings have caused half of the smokers to want to quit and in Thailand, 80% of the smokers think these pictures are effective.

“Over the past 10 years, we have managed to reduce the number of smokers in Malaysia by 2% through our various campaigns. We are definitely not happy with that,” he said.

Liow said national service camps would be made non-smoking premises immediately while smokers would no longer be allowed to indulge their habit along the corridors surrounding shopping malls and complexes.

On setting the minimum price for a 20-cigarette pack, the minister said the price would be adjusted each time the Government announced additional taxes and charges in the Budget. “The Attorney-General’s office is now in the process of gazetting the minimum price,” he said, adding that anyone who failed to comply with the latest rulings could be fined up to RM10,000 or jailed two years or both.

Liow also said for this year alone, the ministry had compounded 2,622 smokers with fines totalling RM564,000 and charged another 1,946 smokers in court for various offences.

Innov8 Run Details

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 2,185 views

Wow it was cool and damn tiring experience! Thanks to Samsung for selected me as one of the participants which represent Samsung Fun Club in this Innov8 Run. Was disappointed that our team thought we could win but actually not, not really sure the reason why but at least we tried our best in the run, maybe our points were deducted because cannot meet the time frame? Too bad because we were the last car to start and actually 45mins – 1hour later than the 1st car who started the run.

Before the actual event, Innov8 Run, we had a get together lunch with all the selected Samsung Fun club participants at Bon Ton Restaurant @ Jalan Conley last Saturday before the actual event. Then we pick our team members using the draw lot method, Yee Leng, Lim and me were faithed as group members and I was picked as a driver.

After the get together lunch, I was think what the people in Samsung said, “Decorate your car and you might win something” might be win something or some surprise, so… I decided to take up the initiative to design my own logo plus Samsung Innov8 logo. It took me some time and money to do it…

Samsung Innov8 Stickers

Samsung Innov8 Stickers

Samsung Innov8 Stickers

Here’s the actual stickers and the end product on my car =) Look nice right? I did that on Saturday about 2am. Then after that faster went to catch some sleep and recharge to face the next morning challenge.

On the morning itself, just drank a cup of Milo and rush to pump petrol as I got that news that petrol dropped on that day itself too and being a kiasu me so waited till Saturday only pump my car to full tank for this Innov8 Run.

Gather @ Samsung Customer Service Plaza

Then went to Samsung Customer Service Plaza @ Jalan 51A/219 and meet up with my team members. Then they distributed a small sticker for each of the participants so that all of them actually know and can recognize who’s in the same team and we have to use the team number thru out the run.

Game Challenge

At about 9am, all the participants was separated to two group as the hall is not enough to fit all of us and my team member went on to the game challenge which actually determine which team will start 1st. The challenge is actually we had to race Asphalt 4 using INNOV8 phones and is hooked up to a Samsung LCD TV. Guess what? Our team actually got the last place and that’s the reason why we were the last car to start the run. =( Too bad I don’t play games and no talent for games.

Training

After that, we proceed to the Samsung Training Center, where we were taught how to use the phone and the basic knowledge of treasure hunt. It’s actually my first time joining a treasure hunt in such big event, and it’s an eye opener. The we were assigned a Marshall and an Adidas t-shirt, car stickers and 2 INNOV8 phones per team. If they would have told me earlier that they actually giving me stickers then I probably not making one myself.

Car Sticker

Speech

Then went on to stick it on my car and we’re off to a speech by Samsung’s head with media launch. The we received 1st question by sms and it actually hit us to locate “Menara KKAUM”. After that a must have big group photo shoot outside of the building so that the media could report about the event. Once that is over with, we’re told to line up the cars in the positions that we’re in, which is the last. LOL!

Line Up

1st Stop – Wisma KKAUM. We were totally out of clue and we were brought to some ulu-ulu place by the GPS and end up in some factory area. Then we wasted quite some time only figured out the place was ASTAKA. It was actually frustrating to use the GPS and the women keep asking me to turn left or right where in actual fact it’s a straight road and when it reach roundabout, the women will keep on saying “Approaching roundabout”! LOL, who doesn’t know la? Just keep quite and lead us to the correct way, that was what we keep on mumbling.

Games

Once we’re at the field, which was not that easy and took us clueless time, two persons from a team need to play a blindfolded game where a person need to walk a distance to get the puzzle and place it into a toy ball while the other person shouts out the directions and instructions. After that, I stayed in the field while my other two members have solve another challenge.

Sloving challenge

After that, we got our passport stamped and get our instructions and tulips and rush off to Digital Mall Section 14 there. We have to look around the building sign board or banner in order for us to solve the questions and need to get the treasure drinks which we got it correctly too. Then went to Sime Darby and took a team photo with the Samsung Omnia billboard and proceed to KL Tower. It was damn jam. Madness…

KL Tower

We get to play Flying Fox @ KL Tower and it’s actually my first time playing the Flying Fox, it’s nothing to shout about. The distance and height is so so only. Haha…

Flying Fox
Kelvin & Hon Mun

Flying Fox
Capture other teams moment when their turn trying out the Flying Fox. You can see the reaction of the face, haha =)

KL Tower Lunch Box
After that, it was about 3-4pm and then we had to rush for our lunch too. This is our lunch box which cost RM15 as I was told. A bit expensive huh?

Then we proceed to Sungei Wang and took another picture of the team members with the Samsung Omnia banner again and gosh we had to go thru all the jam and crazy traffic. Then we were told that McDonalds @ Petaling Street was our next destination. There, we have to spot a bunch of signs or stores to complete our puzzle. Then we had a “Air Mata Kuching” drinking challenge where by we need to drink the cup of ice freeze “Air Mata Kuching” within 15secs and I did it in less than 5secs. Yeah! Too thirsty.

Shopping Challenge Items

Then we were on shopping spree that we were told to buy a bunch of treasures which is natural items and we did it. Turnip, Plum, Mandrin Orange, Egg, Grape. Haha…

Batu Cave

Last Destination

Then another mms showed us our last check point destination. We had to drive all the way to Batu Caves just to submit what we got in the shopping challenge. It’s jam and we got lost few times but lucky and thanks to our Marshal and we are back on track. It was the last destination because the whole event was late and they had to cancel a few other challenge. YaY!… If they did continue the thing… I think I will be fainted there and need to call ambulance.

Sakura Kristal

Then we were given another tulips to our dinner at “Sakura Kristal” @ Taman Melawati. When we reach there only we were told that we need to submit photos or video that we need to take along the whole journey but we didn’t coz we were not informed?! Then went on to the lucky draw and prize giving ceremony and our team have confident that we will surely get number 1 and grab the phone but it was resulted as a disappointment. Then there were some special award… which I thought I might have a chance because of my stickers? but too bad… it was given to the girl who came all the way from Kuala Kangsar and another participant who’s pregnant?!~ but not me. sigh. =’(

My lovely team mate
My lovely team members. Y-Leng & Lim. Cheers!

Innov8 Shadow

Samsung Innov8
Last but not least seriously this Innov8 phone has got nothing to shout about except it’s the 1st 8Mega Pixel Phone?! Haha…

Saimatkong
One bad thing is, after I took out the stickers, it actually peel off some part of my paint too. Sad la… Samsung how can this happen? =(

Need to spend money to respray also.

Chong Wei’s reign as world number one under threat

French Open00

KUALA LUMPUR: Lee Chong Wei’s reign as the world number one for more than two months is under threat following his defeat in the French Open men’s singles semi-final in Paris on Saturday.

The top seed and defending champion lost some valuable ranking points in crashing out to a 21-16, 14-21, 12-21 defeat by Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia.

It was Chong Wei’s second defeat by Taufik within a month. He was also the loser to the former Olympic and world champion in the final of the Macau Open.

The Beijing Olympic Games silver medallist will have to raise his game higher in the last two Super Series tournaments in China (Nov 18-23) and Hong Kong (Nov 25-30) to ensure that he will be able to end the season as world number one.

The last two Super Series tournaments will see the return of the Olympic champion Lin Dan of China and Chong Wei cannot take it easy any more. In fact, only Lin Dan can overtake Chong Wei as world number one before the year ends.

Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s doubles and mixed doubles also ended with the exits of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty respectively.

Only Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui survived their women’s doubles semi-final match.

In final matches yesterday, Wang Lin of China won the women’s singles and He Hanbin-Yu Yang took the mixed doubles title.

Denmark’s Peter Gade-Christensen won his second consecutive Super Series tournament after his “home” Open in Odense last week. He defeated Taufik 16-21, 21-17, 21-7 in the men’s singles final.

Petrol prices cut by 15 sen per litre

Friday, October 31st, 2008 1,631 views

It’s confirmed that we will be having cheaper fuel price. This proof that what I’ve been waiting for is not wasted =)
Another cut is expected on Nov 15… woot!!

PUTRAJAYA: Petrol and diesel prices will go down 15 sen a litre from 12.01am on Saturday – the fourth reduction since August.

The new price of a litre of RON97 will be RM2.15 from RM2.30; RON92 will be RM2.05 from RM2.20; and diesel will be RM2.05 from RM2.20.

The prices will be reduced so that the people could enjoy the benefit of the recent drastic drop in global fuel prices, said Prime Minister Datuk Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in a statement on Friday.

The Star reported on Friday that petrol price will go down by 15sen and that petrol dealers expect another round of price cuts on Nov 15.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said that if the world crude oil price continued to drop at the present rate, local pump prices would likely revert to the pre-June price of RM1.92 per litre.

Shahrir, who said the average world crude oil price for October was US$76.40 (RM267.40) per barrel, said the average for November might go below US$70.

“So (if this happens) the price of petrol at the retail level will probably go back to RM1.92 per litre,” he said.

As a cap has been placed on a price of RM1.92 per litre, he said that if the world crude oil price goes down even lower than that, the Government could end its fuel subsidy and use the money for other purposes.

For this year up to September, the Government spent RM16.8bil on fuel subsidy and RM2.5bil on rebates for motorists and motorcyclists.

“That means there is a likelihood that we will spend RM19bil to RM20bil on fuel subsidy for the whole year,” Shahrir said.

Shahrir hoped petrol station owners would accept the price reduction and accept any loss as part of business.

He pointed out that the Government had always been fair to the station owners, including helping them reduce operating costs by reverting to self-service, cutting on the number of staff, not forcing them to open for 24 hours as well as increasing their margin from 9.5 sen to 12 sen per litre in June.

Govt expected to reduce petrol price by 15 sen a litre Saturday

Friday, October 31st, 2008 1,550 views

Yes PETROL PRICE GONNA REDUCE AGAIN, I have been waiting for this and my fuel tank was empty this few days and just pump 30 bucks to keep my car moving… ahah kiasuness…

PETALING JAYA: Petrol prices are expected to be cut by 15 sen a litre at 12.01am tomorrow – the fourth reduction since August.

This means the RON97 will cost RM2.15 a litre, down from RM2.30, and the price of RON92 is also expected to go down.

Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM) president Abdul Wahid Bidin said they expected the new prices to take effect early tomorrow although they have not received a directive from the Finance Ministry.

A dealer who declined to be named said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad had met with PDAM representatives on Wednesday.

He said Shahrir gave them notice that prices were going down.

“This is good because it has given us the three days we need to figure out how much stock we should keep to avoid big losses,” he said.

It is also understood that another price change is expected on Nov 15.

When asked at a function here yesterday, Shahrir refused to confirm or deny that prices would be reduced tomorrow.

“A reduction is imminent of course. We cannot deny consumers the opportunity that has arisen from lower global oil prices,” he said.

Shahrir, however, said that any directive would come from the Treasury and that any agreement on reducing prices would be discussed by the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Second Finance Minister and himself.

“So it is difficult for all of us to meet at one time. There is, however, a Cabinet meeting (today), so it will probably be discussed then.”

Shahrir said that the Government would also be moving to make price changes every fortnight.

“This would be an ideal situation. If the price is changed once a week, it will be too short a time for any effects to be felt.”

He said petrol dealers had to realise that they were in a business and that other businesses also suffered when prices changed.
