KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong finally rose to the occasion to reach the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open with a stunning win over reigning Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia.
Yesterday, the duo blew away the top seeds and world No. 1 Markis-Hendra 21-11, 21-17 in just 21 minutes in the quarter-finals.
With the win, Kien Keat-Boon Heong have avenged their defeats to the Indonesians in the last two tournaments — the Beijing Games and French Open.
The Malaysians’ tame defeats in those two tournaments had raised doubts about their status as the country’s top pair.
Power pair: Koo Kien Keat (right) and Tan Boon Heong finally struck form by beating Indonesia’s Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan to reach the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open Friday.
Today, the Macau Open champions will take on compatriots Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari, thus assuring Malaysia of at least a place in the final.
Zakry-Fairuzizuan, who are determined to regain their winning touch in the Super Series, defeated South Koreans Cho Gun-woo-Yoo Yeon-seong 21-16, 12-21, 21-15 in the other quarter-final.
The duo’s form suffered a dip after the back-to-back Super Series wins in Singapore and Indonesia in June.
But yesterday, the show-stealers were definitely Kien Keat-Boon Heong, who have now virtually confirmed their place in the Super Series Masters Finals, which will be held in Kota Kinabalu from Dec 18-21.
National coach Rexy Mainaky said that there were positive vibes from both his players.
“I think the key to their win today (yesterday) was their positive approach throughout the game. Every shot was taken with confidence. They tried their best to enjoy the game,” said Rexy in a telephone interview.
“The Malaysians have lost to the Indonesians in the last two tournaments (out of eight meetings). But I think this was their best win against them. They were able to control the game and force their opponents to make mistakes.”
Rexy, however, noted that Markis had placed an ice-pack on his knee after the defeat.
“It looked as though that Markis was not in his best condition. But, having said that, I suppose they (Markis and Kido) would not have competed here if they were not fully fit,” he said.
Kien Keat, however, failed to make the semi-finals of the mixed doubles event with partner Ng Hui Lin when they crashed 18-21, 12-21 to China’s Zheng Bo-Ma Jin.
Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair of Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty continued their fine run in international tournaments when they checked into the semi-finals with a convincing 21-14, 21-15 win over Denmark’s Kamilla Rytter Juhl-Lena Frier Kristiansen.
The duo will take on China’s Zhang Yawen-Zhao Tingting today.

World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei marged into the final in the China Open Shanghai 2008 to set up a repeat of the Olympics meet with world No. 2 Lin Dan. Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair of Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui made it into their third straight finals.
Again… Lee Chong Wei lost to Super Dan…
From the start Lee Chong Wei showed a good performance and taking the lead… but in the end lost to Super Dan in just two straight games 21-18 21-9.
I just don’t understand why Lee Chong Wei don’t want to attack and just play the same way he played during the Olympic match with Lin Dan. Dato Lee Chong Wei just play skill with Lin Dan but I think his skill is still not match with Lin Dan and the speed sure lost to Super Dan, anyway keep it up Data Lee!
On the other hand, Malaysia Women Double lost to China too, but they did tried their best and gave a good fight, keep it up.
“Super Dan” blew world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei away in the final of the China Open after coming back three months since his Olympics victory. Chow How Ban reports from Shanghai, China.
Chong Wei, women’s pair fail to land China Open titles
Lin Dan reigns again
KUALA LUMPUR: It was double blow for Malaysia when world number one Lee Chong Wei and the women’s doubles pair of Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty failed in their bids to nail their first China Open title in Shanghai yesterday.
The top seeded Chong Wei failed to get the better of Olympic champion Lin Dan in their first meeting since the Beijing Games final last August. He crashed to a 18-21, 9-21 defeat in 39 minutes.
Still invincible: Lin Dan got the better of Lee Chong Wei again in the final of the China Open yesterday. The Beijing Olympic champion won 21-18, 21-9.
Eei Hui-Pei Tty also had high hopes of bagging their second Super Series win after their breakthrough victory in the Danish Open last month but failed to get their game going and lost 14-21, 19-21 to China’s Zhang Yawen-Zhao Tingting.
While Lin Dan had scored a more comprehensive win in their last meeting, Chong Wei did offer some resistance in the first game.
He led 4-1 and 11-9 but the second seeded Lin Dan caught up at 15-all and pulled away to take the first game.
Lin Dan took the second game easily to cap a perfect comeback to competition since his Olympic triumph three months ago. It was Lin Dan’s third China Open title after 2003 and 2004.
The defeat for Chong Wei was not much of a surprise as he had put up shaky performances en route to reaching the final.
He came back from a game down to beat Chinese junior Qiu Yanbo in the first round and was also taken to the distance by team-mate Wong Choong Hann and South Korean Park Sung-hwan in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
On the other hand, Lin Dan came through a draw of a host of Chinese upstarts and had the luxury of saving his best performance for the final.
It is the fourth consecutive time Chong Wei had failed to win a tournament since he took the top spot in the world rankings.
He lost to Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia in the Japan Open final. Chong Wei also suffered two successive defeats by former Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat, also from Indonesia, in the final of the Macau Open and semi-final of the French Open.
As for Pei Tty-Eei Hui, their third successive Super Series final appearance did not bring them joy as Yawen-Tingting avenged their defeat by the Malaysians in the semi-finals of the French Open.
Despite this, doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky was satisfied with their performance.
“They are playing consistently. They fought all the way in the second game and could have levelled the score at 19-all. But a dropshot from Eei Hui failed to clear the net,” said Rexy in a telephone interview from Shanghai yesterday.
All-England men’s doubles champions Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung, playing in their first tournament since suffering a shock first-round exit at the Beijing Olympics, came from behind to beat Danish pair Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen 17-21, 21-17, 21-13.
Yong-dae partnered Lee Hyo-jung to beat Chen Xu-Zhao Yunlei of China 21-16, 21-15 to add the mixed doubles title to his collection.

What??! We are not getting subsidy from our Malaysia Government anymore and we are the one who subsidising the Malaysia Government? In actual fact we should be paying RM1.62 or RM1.70 per liter? What say you and what’s your reaction?
How could it be?
Malaysia considers dumping petrol subsidy scheme
Malaysia is not currently subsiding petrol and may dump its subsidy scheme altogether, despite major protests earlier this year over spiralling pump prices, a minister said Tuesday.
The government on Tuesday cut pump prices by seven percent to 2.00 ringgit (0.56 dollars) per litre as global crude prices continued to ease. The price of diesel was also reduced by 15 sen to 1.90 ringgit per litre.
“We have stopped subsidising petrol from the time when the pump prices were cut to 2.00 ringgit per litre,” Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Shahrir Samad told AFP.
He said that at current prices, the government is making about 30 sen per litre.
“At about 60 dollars per barrel we are already making money,” he said.
Shahrir said the government was still handing out direct subsidies in the form of cash rebates for motorists of 625 ringgit per year and that diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) were still being subsidised.
“The rebate system is still being enforced… but it will runs its course until March next year before we either stop it or implement a new system,” he said.
Tuesday’s cut was the fifth the government has announced since a 41 percent hike in June as the price of crude soared, sparking angry street protests and calls for Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to resign.
Shahrir said the government will decide by the end of the month if subsidies will be reinstated if crude oil prices go up again. It will consider setting a floor price of 1.92 ringgit per litre.
“I would be happy to have a floor price of 1.92 ringgit. This would allow the government to earn some revenue and it is also easier to manage the price,” he said.
“It is also a better option because we can use the savings for development or to reduce the deficit.”
The government earlier this month announced a 7.0 billion ringgit (2.0 billion dollar) stimulus programme — reaped from savings on reduced oil subsidies — to boost the economy amid the global slowdown.
But the additional spending saw the government widen its budget deficit forecast for 2009 to 4.8 percent, from 3.6 percent predicted in August.

The revelation by Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Shahrir Abdul Samad yesterday that the government has stopped subsidising fuel since early this month raises more questions than answers.
- Consumers subsidising the government
- Engage stakeholders before policy shift
Consumers already paying more than full cost
Nov 19, 08 11:33pm
The government may dump its petrol subsidy scheme altogether as consumers are already paying more than the full cost at the pumps at current price level.
- Consumers pay gov’t 30 sen per litre
- Lim: Actual price should be RM1.62
