Did you know about fruit label that you are going to buy?

Sunday, August 31st, 2008 2,956 views

I got email on this and I believe this is very useful information for all. Look clear at the label before you buy food or even fruits!

Read the Numbers on Your Fruit

Fruit Label

I just found this out about a month ago and I’ve been an organic vegan for over four years, go figure. That just goes to say that we must all remain as students and continue to learn and learn ¡ª never stop studying and gaining new information.

Okay, so what did I learn?
I learned that sticker labels on the fruits actually tell you how the fruits have been grown ¡ª whether they were organically grown or conventionally grown with pesticides and herbicides; oh, and let’s not forget about the genetically engineered fruits.

Conventional Fruit Labels
Four digits and does not start with 9
** mostly starting with the digit 4

Organic Fruit Labels
Five digits and starts with number 9

Genetically Modified Fruits
Start with the digit 8
So next time you go shopping, remember these critical numbers and know
how to avoid purchasing inorganic and GMO fruits.
Shop Safe :)

This is good to know because stores aren’t obligated to tell you if a fruit has been genetically modified (grrr¡.)

Okay, so if you come across an apple in the store and it’s label is 4922, it’s an conventional apple grown with herbicides and harmful fertilizers. If it has a sticker 99222, it’s organic and safe to eat.
If it says 89222, then RUN!!!! I t has been genetically modified (GMO).

Mobile number portability to start today

Friday, August 29th, 2008 2,925 views

Finally Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is here! But will it benefit you? For me I don’t need this, coz I own two line and I still want to have two phone line as some place one of the telco will have no coverage so another telco will come in handy =)

No longer will the prefixes of 016 solely be that of a DiGi subscriber, or 012 be an exclusive Maxis number.

PUTRAJAYA: Mobile phone users can now enjoy the freedom of switching network service providers without having to forego their original phone number (including the prefix).

Effective Friday, the service will be extended to users with prepaid mobile phone numbers in the Klang Valley. Postpaid users can start enjoying the facility in two weeks.

In a statement, Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said the service, known as Mobile Number Portability (MNP), would take away the inconvenience associated with switching service providers and consumers’ concern over losing their contacts when doing so.

“Service providers are allowed to charge up to RM25 each time a subscriber changes their mobile phone service provider. This will give the users choice and freedom to choose their service providers without the inconvenience of having to change their numbers.

“The nationwide launch for the MNP will be in October,” Shaziman said.

Shaziman said the MNP is about improved service quality, better packages, better customer service and giving consumers choice. He added that initially only individual account holders would be able to change their service providers while business accounts could do so after the nationwide launch.

He said that until the nationwide launch, each service provider would only be able to accept 100 requests per day, adding that prepaid users are advised to finish their credit balance before changing the service provider as any remaining credit would not be refunded.

“Mobile phone users are advised not to rush into porting but should first study the various packages being offered before choosing the new service provider of their choice,” he said.

Mobile phone users can refer to the frequently-asked-questions on MNP at the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission website at and all of the mobile operator’s websites to find out more about the service.

28 August 2008

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is the ability for users to switch to a new mobile service provider, while retaining their existing mobile number.

The main benefit of MNP is freedom of choice and the competition that it generates. Now you are free to choose a new mobile service provider without having to change to a new number. This means you can avoid the inconvenience of having to notify friends and associates that you have changed your number.

‘Blackouts’ for users of pirated Windows

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 2,927 views

Are you using Pirated Windows XP?

If the answer is yes then better becareful and you may face blackouts! Last time it was “Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA)Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) now it’s “Blackouts”. Windows XP Blackouts Get your original windows here copy now before it’s too late =)

PETALING JAYA: Starting Wednesday, users with pirated copies of Microsoft Corp’s Windows XP Professional operating system (OS) on machines that are Internet-capable could find their computer displays going black and with no screen icons visible.

There are 8.6 million users of Win XP Pro in Malaysia and about three million are expected to suffer the “blackouts,” according to Microsoft Malaysia.

To continue working, the user would need to reset the machine’s desktop background. Everything will return to normal. But when 60 minutes are up, the black screen will reappear and the user must go through the whole process again.

This will keep happening until the user licenses the copy of Win XP Pro on the machine by going to a Microsoft reseller or getting a licence online at the Each licence costs RM580.

This initiative is part of Microsoft’s antipiracy campaign, dubbed Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), aimed at educating users on the benefits of using genuine software, K.T. Ng, Microsoft Malaysia’s director of client business group, told The Star on Tuesday.

Win XP Professional was chosen for the antipiracy blitz because it is the most pirated version of Microsoft’s Win XP operating system. The other version is Windows XP Home, which is for home users.

This is the second time that Microsoft is needling users of pirated copies of its operating system to go legitimate. Two years ago, it sprang its WGA initiative on local users of Win XP Pro and Win XP Home.

That time, a pop-up message showed up whenever the PC with a pirated Windows OS was switched on, with the intention of shaming business and home users into getting legitimate copies. The message said “This copy of Windows is not genuine.”

It was quite successful. At that time, there were about 5.1 million pirated copies of Windows XP Pro and after the exercise, about two million of the copies were validated, said Microsoft Malaysia.

“We are encouraged by that response,” said Ng. “So this time, we have escalated the penalty to a black screen that reappears every hour until the user validates his or her copy of Win XP Pro.”

Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, chief executive officer of Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), lauded the WGA campaign.

MDeC is caretaker of the country’s MSC Malaysia initiative, which is working to build up the nation’s knowledge economy.

“MDeC respects the rights of companies to protect their intellectual property. It’s a reminder that software piracy doesn’t pay, especially when Malaysians are themselves putting a lot of effort into creating original software,” he said.

Not clear
Several users and industry pundits that The Star spoke to believe Microsoft is using its WGA campaign to herd business users into upgrading to its newest operating system, Windows Vista, which hasn’t garnered interest among companies because of its higher hardware requirements.

“Microsoft has stopped selling Win XP in the market, so you have to wonder why it is spending time and money to take down users of pirated copies of this OS,” said a PC user, who asked for anonymity. “Why isn’t it also targeting users who have pirated copies of Windows Vista?”

“So if I’m using a pirated copy of Vista at this time, I won’t be hassled? Got to wonder about that.”

Ng replied that the concern now is XP Pro, which is widely pirated. “Vista isn’t pirated as much. WGA is continuous and should there be a Vista piracy problem, we will address it down the road,” he said.

Anwar Won Permatang Pauh By-Election

will he take over the government? What your point of view?

PERMATANG PAUH BY-ELECTION: Anwar wins with 15,671 majority

Anwar is Permatang Pauh MP (Final update)

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has won the Permatang Pauh by-election.

The PKR de-facto leader was returned to Parliament with a majority of 15,671 votes, exceeding the 13,388-vote majority won by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in the March 8 general election.

Anwar garnered 31,195 votes to beat Barisan candidate Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah, who polled 15,524 votes, while Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia candidate Hanafi Hamat lost his RM15,000 deposit after getting only 92 votes. There were 447 spoilt votes.

“This is the people’s victory,” Anwar said in a victory speech.

“Permatang Pauh has given a clear signal to the leadership of this country. We demand change. We want freedom. We don’t want to live with corruption and oppression.

“We want an independent judiciary, we want the economy to benefit the vast majority not the corrupt few,” he added.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the result was proof that democracy was still alive in the country and there was no manipulation involved.

“As we have pointed out right from the start, we would be facing a tough challenge,” he said.

The closely watched by-election was called after Dr Wan Azizah resigned as the MP on July 31 to enable her husband to run for election.

Anwar held the seat for four terms before he was sacked from his Deputy Prime Minister’s post in 1998 under corruption and sodomy charges.

Dr Wan Azizah, who had been known as a reluctant politician, won the seat for a third term in March.

A mammoth crowd comprising PKR leaders and supporters gathered early at the tallying centre at the Tuanku Bainun Teacher Training College in Bukit Mertajam to celebrate Anwar’s victory.

Supporters in the crowd let off fireworks as returning officer Roslan Yahaya announced the results about 10pm.

Voter turnout was relatively high, at about 80% of the total of 58,459 registered voters in the constituency.

Barisan was the underdog from the start in the hard-fought by-election that Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak described as a titanic challenge.

Anwar’s convincing victory was reminiscent of his heyday, when he secured a stunning 23,515-vote majority in the 1995 general election by polling 27,945 votes. In Tuesday’s polling, 47,258 voters cast their ballots, or 80.83% of the 58,459 total number of voters.

Avril Lavigne Concert in Malaysia will go on

Show will go on for rock star Avril on Aug 29

PETALING JAYA: Canadian rock star Avril Lavigne will be performing in Kuala Lumpur after all.

The final decision, after a week of uncertainty, was made at a meeting of senior officials from the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry yesterday.

The organiser, Galaxy Group, obtained its permit last evening to stage the concert at Stadium Merdeka on Aug 29, sources said.

Avril’s concert here – the launch pad of her Asian dates – made headlines across the world after the Federal Territory PAS Youth told the ministry and the Kuala Lumpur Mayor to ban the event.

The wing had argued that Avril’s concert is “too punk and rock for Malaysian youth especially so during Merdeka month.”

Since then, many have criticised the wing’s move and decisions were purportedly made on the status of the show and its date.

Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal had earlier said the application to hold the concert had to be studied, as they did not want it to coincide with the Merdeka period and the tahlil religious programme on Aug 29.

Shafie had also denied that the ministry’s earlier decision to call off the concert was in response to PAS Youth’s call for the ban.
