Fuel prices down another 10sen

PETALING JAYA: The retail price of petrol and diesel will go down another 10sen effective Wednesday.

The new price of RON97 petrol would be RM1.90 per litre down from RM2.00, while RON92 petrol and diesel would be down to RM1.80 from RM1.90 per litre, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said in a statement released at about 5pm on Tuesday.

“As the world fuel price has had a sharp decrease lately, the Government has decided to once again reduce the retail price for the public’s benefit,” he said.

This is the fifth time petrol and diesel prices had been reduced since Malaysian petrol retail prices hit a high of RM2.70 per litre in June.

Petrol price cut in Malaysia

Malaysia on Tuesday cut petrol prices by five percent, bringing pump prices down to 1.90 ringgit (0.52 dollars) per litre amid easing global crude prices.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawisaid said the 10 sen cut would be effective on Wednesday with diesel also reduced by 10 sen to 1.80 ringgit per litre.

“As the price of oil has visibly dropped, the government has again made a decision to reduce retail prices so that the public can benefit,” he said in a statement.

It is the sixth fuel price cut the government has announced since June’s 41 percent hike on the back of soaring crude costs, which sparked angry street protests and calls for the premier to resign.

The previous cut, by 15 sen, was just over two weeks ago.

June’s hike saw inflation soar, with the August price index reaching a 26-year high of 8.5 percent, also driven by the escalating cost of food and transportation.

Inflation has since eased at 7.6 percent in October as fuel prices dropped.

Smiley face will appear in night sky

Is it a flying saucer? Is it a runaway intergalactic missile? No, it’s just a smiley face.

On Monday night Venus, Jupiter and a three-day-old crescent Moon, will appear as a smiley face above the western horizon.

The unusual astronomical event will be close enough to see with the naked eye, any time from 9pm (AEDT) onwards.

But if you miss it, you will have to wait another five years before the formation appears again.

Stargazers spot heavenly smile

THIS will put a smile on your face – the biggest grin you’ll EVER see.

Stargazers in Australia have spotted Venus, Jupiter and a crescent moon coming together to send a message of happiness to Earth.

But unfortunately it seems the heavens are smiling on only one side of the world.

While people in the state of Western Australia had the best view – with the moon appearing closer to the “eyes” – us Brits won’t see it at all.

Be happy

By the time the sun sets for Europe and Africa the moon will appear between the planets, pushing the “mouth” between the “eyes” to create a weird scrambled face effect.

And in the US, the effect will be REVERSED and will appear as a grumpy FROWN.

According to experts the best time to see the phenomenon has been around 20 to 30 minutes after sunset.

And even though the planets and moon appeared to be close together, in reality they weren’t.

The crescent moon is 403,000km away while Venus is 149.5million kilometres away. Jupiter is 870million kilometres away.

David Widdowson, from astronomy calendar website Astrovisuals, said the heavens might be trying to send us a message to shrug off bad financial times and be happy.

He added: “It is perhaps a reminder that things aren’t so bad and that we should try to follow the Python Commandment to ‘always look on the bright side of life’.”

THE smiley face created by Venus, Jupiter and a crescent moon has been captured on camera by news.com.au readers.

The best time to see the phenomenon was about 20 to 30 minutes after sunset.

Send your photos of the smiling sky, and your location, to news@news.com.au

Venus and Jupiter have appeared side by side in the evening sky over the past week or so, but tonight was the best night to see the “face” appear, astronomers said.

Viewers in Western Australia had the best view, with the moon appearing closer to the “eyes”.

While the planets and moon appeared to be close together, in reality they weren’t. The crescent moon is 403,000km away while Venus is 149.5 million kilometres away and Jupiter 870 million kilometres.

Stargazers in Europe and Africa will miss out completely. By the time the sun sets for them the moon will appear between the planets, pushing the “mouth” between the “eyes” to create more of a Picasso-esque effect.

In the United States, the effect will be inverted and will appear as a frown.

David Widdowson, from astronomy calendar website Astrovisuals, said the heavens might be trying to send us a message to shrug off bad financial times and be happy.

“It is perhaps a reminder that things aren’t so bad and that we should try to follow the Python Commandment to ‘always look on the bright side of life’,” he said.

And perhaps it should tell Americans being frowned upon to have a long, hard look at themselves…smiley

It will be another five years before the astral phenomenon appears again.

Badminton: Agonisingly close Fairuz and Zakry go down fighting in HK final

Monday, December 1st, 2008 732 views

It was a good fight with the Korean but I think Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari still need to be more consistent and more training! They could have won the Championship, Malaysia Boleh!

KUALA LUMPUR: Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari let slip the chance to become the country’s most successful shuttlers in Super Series tournaments this year when they narrowly lost in the final of the Hong Kong Open yesterday.

Zakry-Fairuzizuan were beaten 23-25, 21-19, 20-22 by South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung after putting up a tenacious fight in an nail-biting one-hour final match.

If not for several sloppy and poor returns in the crucial stage, Zakry-Fairuzizuan could have trooped out with their third Super Series title this season after the back-to-back win in Singapore and Indonesia in June.

The Hong Kong Open is the 12th and final leg of the Super Series this season and one other Malaysian shuttler won two titles this year — world number one Lee Chong Wei in the men’s singles of the Malaysia and Singapore Opens.

Fairuzizuan was happy that they were able to give the more fancied Koreans a run for their money.

Jung Jae-sung and Lee Yong-dae
The victors: The South Korean pair of Jung Jae-sung (left) and Lee Yong-dae defeated Mohd Fairuzizuan and Mohd Zakry 25-23, 19-21, 22-20 in the final of the Hong Kong Open yesterday

“We are aware that they are fast and deadly in their attacks. Instead of lifting the shuttle, we kept it low. Our tactic worked and we were able to keep pace with them,” said Fairuzizuan in a telephone interview.

“In the past, we had difficulty returning their attacks but this time, we managed to make them sweat on several occasions. But at the end, we put ourselves in trouble. In our excitement to win, we made several mistakes.”

Fairuzizuan, however, chose to look at the bright side.

“This is our best performance after a long time. We needed this to boost our morale. At least, we know that we have what it takes to give the top players a good fight,” he said.

“Now we must try to be consistent. It will be good if we can reach at least the quarter-finals in all other future tournaments.”

Zakry, however, was frustrated over the narrow defeat.

“It’s frustrating to make silly mistakes when it mattered most. Our coach (Rexy Mainaky) was calling out for us to relax and play a more patient game. But we lost control towards the end,” he said.

“But this defeat has fuelled the fire in me to go all out at the Super Series Masters Finals (in Kota Kinabalu from Dec 18-21). It will be our last tournament this year and we want to win it.”

The Finals feature eight pairs and Zakry-Fairuzizuan qualified as the second ranked combination in the Series standings.

Meanwhile, China’s badminton couple, Lin Dan and Xie Xingfang, both lost in the final. Lin Dan was beaten 9-21, 21-9, 17-21 by compatriot Chen Jin while Xingfang fell to a 16-21, 21-10, 10-21 defeat by Wang Chen of Hong Kong.

Rexy: Duo are serious contenders at Masters Finals

KUALA LUMPUR: The fighting displays of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif in the Hong Kong Open yesterday has brought back the smile on the face of national doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky.

And Rexy believes that the duo can do even better at the Super Series Masters Finals, which will be held in Kota Kinabalu from Dec 18-21.

Yesterday, Fairuzizuan-Zakry put up a great fight before losing 23-25, 21-19, 20-22 to South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung in a thrilling final that lasted for an hour.

Rexy

Despite the defeat, Fairuzizuan-Zakry showed that they were back in form after going through a slump over the last five months.

There had been no outstanding results since winning back-to-back Open titles in Singapore and Indonesia in June.

Rexy said that they could have won the title but for Zakry’s poor shots in the crucial stages of the rubber game.

“Zakry realised his mistakes. He took a risk with fancy strokes and they cost the pair dearly, especially when they were leading 16-14,” said Rexy in a telephone interview.

“They should have kept the rally going. Yong-dae was tired and they failed to take advantage of it. On top of that, luck was also not on their side.”

But Rexy was happy that the duo held the Koreans by their throats.

“It was nice to see Fairuzizuan and Zakry getting back their rhythm. It should motivate them to do even better against all the established pairs,” he said.

“I think, they will challenge strongly for the title at the Super Series Masters Finals. But they must not take it easy in training when they get back home. They must continue to work hard.”

Badminton: Kien Keat-Boon Heong stun Olympic champions for semis spot @ Hong Kong Open

Hong Kong Open

Hong Kong Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong finally rose to the occasion to reach the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open with a stunning win over reigning Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia.

Yesterday, the duo blew away the top seeds and world No. 1 Markis-Hendra 21-11, 21-17 in just 21 minutes in the quarter-finals.

With the win, Kien Keat-Boon Heong have avenged their defeats to the Indonesians in the last two tournaments — the Beijing Games and French Open.

The Malaysians’ tame defeats in those two tournaments had raised doubts about their status as the country’s top pair.

Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong
Power pair: Koo Kien Keat (right) and Tan Boon Heong finally struck form by beating Indonesia’s Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan to reach the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open Friday.

Today, the Macau Open champions will take on compatriots Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari, thus assuring Malaysia of at least a place in the final.

Zakry-Fairuzizuan, who are determined to regain their winning touch in the Super Series, defeated South Koreans Cho Gun-woo-Yoo Yeon-seong 21-16, 12-21, 21-15 in the other quarter-final.

The duo’s form suffered a dip after the back-to-back Super Series wins in Singapore and Indonesia in June.

But yesterday, the show-stealers were definitely Kien Keat-Boon Heong, who have now virtually confirmed their place in the Super Series Masters Finals, which will be held in Kota Kinabalu from Dec 18-21.

National coach Rexy Mainaky said that there were positive vibes from both his players.

“I think the key to their win today (yesterday) was their positive approach throughout the game. Every shot was taken with confidence. They tried their best to enjoy the game,” said Rexy in a telephone interview.

“The Malaysians have lost to the Indonesians in the last two tournaments (out of eight meetings). But I think this was their best win against them. They were able to control the game and force their opponents to make mistakes.”

Rexy, however, noted that Markis had placed an ice-pack on his knee after the defeat.

“It looked as though that Markis was not in his best condition. But, having said that, I suppose they (Markis and Kido) would not have competed here if they were not fully fit,” he said.

Kien Keat, however, failed to make the semi-finals of the mixed doubles event with partner Ng Hui Lin when they crashed 18-21, 12-21 to China’s Zheng Bo-Ma Jin.

Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair of Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty continued their fine run in international tournaments when they checked into the semi-finals with a convincing 21-14, 21-15 win over Denmark’s Kamilla Rytter Juhl-Lena Frier Kristiansen.

The duo will take on China’s Zhang Yawen-Zhao Tingting today.

Magic Mug / Color Changing Mug

A magic mug is a mug that, when filled with a hot liquid, changes colour. This effect is created by using a special oxidized ink.

These mugs are often manufactured and sold as memorabilia. For example, a mug may reveal a picture of the town or monument where it was sold. They are sometimes given away to promote organisations. Customers can also have their own photographs printed on the mugs.

Have you got yourself a Christmas Present? What did you get for your loved one or your special someone this Christmas as a X’mas Present? Look no further than this Magic Mug and I’m sure he / she will be very impressed and will be very touched.

Lee Chong Wei Lost To Lin Dan Again @ LI NING CHINA OPEN SUPER SERIES 08

LI NING CHINA OPEN SUPER SERIES 08

World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei marged into the final in the China Open Shanghai 2008 to set up a repeat of the Olympics meet with world No. 2 Lin Dan. Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair of Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui made it into their third straight finals.

Lee Chong Wei vs Lin Dan

Again… Lee Chong Wei lost to Super Dan…
From the start Lee Chong Wei showed a good performance and taking the lead… but in the end lost to Super Dan in just two straight games 21-18 21-9.

I just don’t understand why Lee Chong Wei don’t want to attack and just play the same way he played during the Olympic match with Lin Dan. Dato Lee Chong Wei just play skill with Lin Dan but I think his skill is still not match with Lin Dan and the speed sure lost to Super Dan, anyway keep it up Data Lee!

On the other hand, Malaysia Women Double lost to China too, but they did tried their best and gave a good fight, keep it up.

“Super Dan” blew world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei away in the final of the China Open after coming back three months since his Olympics victory. Chow How Ban reports from Shanghai, China.

Chong Wei, women’s pair fail to land China Open titles

Lin Dan reigns again

KUALA LUMPUR: It was double blow for Malaysia when world number one Lee Chong Wei and the women’s doubles pair of Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty failed in their bids to nail their first China Open title in Shanghai yesterday.

The top seeded Chong Wei failed to get the better of Olympic champion Lin Dan in their first meeting since the Beijing Games final last August. He crashed to a 18-21, 9-21 defeat in 39 minutes.

Lin Dan
Still invincible: Lin Dan got the better of Lee Chong Wei again in the final of the China Open yesterday. The Beijing Olympic champion won 21-18, 21-9.

Eei Hui-Pei Tty also had high hopes of bagging their second Super Series win after their breakthrough victory in the Danish Open last month but failed to get their game going and lost 14-21, 19-21 to China’s Zhang Yawen-Zhao Tingting.

While Lin Dan had scored a more comprehensive win in their last meeting, Chong Wei did offer some resistance in the first game.

He led 4-1 and 11-9 but the second seeded Lin Dan caught up at 15-all and pulled away to take the first game.

Lin Dan took the second game easily to cap a perfect comeback to competition since his Olympic triumph three months ago. It was Lin Dan’s third China Open title after 2003 and 2004.

The defeat for Chong Wei was not much of a surprise as he had put up shaky performances en route to reaching the final.

He came back from a game down to beat Chinese junior Qiu Yanbo in the first round and was also taken to the distance by team-mate Wong Choong Hann and South Korean Park Sung-hwan in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.

On the other hand, Lin Dan came through a draw of a host of Chinese upstarts and had the luxury of saving his best performance for the final.

It is the fourth consecutive time Chong Wei had failed to win a tournament since he took the top spot in the world rankings.

He lost to Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia in the Japan Open final. Chong Wei also suffered two successive defeats by former Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat, also from Indonesia, in the final of the Macau Open and semi-final of the French Open.

As for Pei Tty-Eei Hui, their third successive Super Series final appearance did not bring them joy as Yawen-Tingting avenged their defeat by the Malaysians in the semi-finals of the French Open.

Despite this, doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky was satisfied with their performance.

“They are playing consistently. They fought all the way in the second game and could have levelled the score at 19-all. But a dropshot from Eei Hui failed to clear the net,” said Rexy in a telephone interview from Shanghai yesterday.

All-England men’s doubles champions Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung, playing in their first tournament since suffering a shock first-round exit at the Beijing Olympics, came from behind to beat Danish pair Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen 17-21, 21-17, 21-13.

Yong-dae partnered Lee Hyo-jung to beat Chen Xu-Zhao Yunlei of China 21-16, 21-15 to add the mixed doubles title to his collection.
