BlackBerry users hit by outage

Thursday, December 24th, 2009 1,917 views

BlackBerry outage

Hmm I was wondering why my BlackBerry constantly connected and disconnected from the network and most of the time only I could get “edge” in small cap instead of “EDGE” big cap. When you see “EDGE” meaning you are connected to the network and able to send / receive emails and surf and IM or twitter. Arghhh, what happened to Research in Motion – RIM?

I have been searching high and low and found some source said it’s North America, but how come I can’t be connected to “EDGE” and affected? I’m not sure whether my case is related or not, but I don’t see any other BlackBerry users complaining about it?? Are you are BlackBerry user? Can you confirm whether is there any outage these few days? It’s really driving my crazyyyy….!

BlackBerry users hit by eight-hour outage

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

* BlackBerry didn’t give reason for outage, which ended around 2:45 a.m. ET
* At one point, 100% of North American customers were affected
* A similar outage hit BlackBerry system last week
* Research in Motion says it has about 32 million global BlackBerry subscribers

(CNN) — BlackBerry customers throughout North America were without e-mail and Internet services for more than eight hours after a widespread outage that lasted until early Wednesday.

Customers began receiving e-mails again around 2:45 a.m. ET. Initial reports of outages came from BlackBerry around 6:30 p.m.

BlackBerry did not give a reason for the outage. It was the second such outage for users in less than a week.

At one point, BlackBerry estimated 100 percent of its customers in North America were affected by the outage, according to an e-mail sent to customers.

“BlackBerry subscribers may be unable to send or receive messages. Subscribers may also be unable to register their device, roam in another location, or use other services such as Internet browsing,” the e-mail said.

“BlackBerry Internet Service subscribers may be unable to use the BlackBerry Internet Service web site or perform activities such as creating new accounts, integrating third-party email accounts, or viewing email attachments.”

Research in Motion Ltd., maker of the devices, said it had about 32 million global BlackBerry subscribers as of the end of August.

BlackBerry phones run on multiple wireless carriers, including AT&T, Sprint Nextel and Verizon.

PIKOM PC Fair 2009 (III) is here, which started from last week. It is the 3rd PC Fair of the year 2009. I went to PC Fair since few years back till now, every time there’s PC Fair I will sure go and have a visit no matter I have anything in mind to purchase or not. This year I would like to get the WD 1TB external HDD as my HDD gonna out of space coz took too much photo la!

But for me, I still like PC Fair in PWTC better, because the KLCC PC Fair really badly manage for the past few times, all one way straight and if you decide to go out or halfway, you can’t! That’s the main problem, besides jam, crowded, expensive food, expensive car parking fees etc. What to do??

Want to buy cheap laptop or netbook? cheap pc? cheap pen drive/thumb drive, external hard disk (HDD), dvd-r, dvd-rw, cd-r, ram, Broadband like Streamyx, IZZI, Maxis 3G Broadband, Digi 3G Broadband, Celcom 3G Broadband, P1 W1MAX with wiggy, HWM Magazine, PC.com, pc accessories, mouse, keyboard, speaker, camera, DSLR, GPS, Projector… etc and a lot’s more. Last PC fair I bought a Asus EEEPC 1005HA netbook which is very good deal! But now all the netbook or notebook / laptop sure come with Win7 liao lo.

This year I think there’s more Broadband war as the Potong campaign and new 3G Broadband in the market, Digi 3G Turbo etc…

Avira Antivirus Girls
Then maybe there’s antivirus war by Kaspersky (Jakie Chan as spoke person) and Avira (more nurse compare to last fair?) too!

For those who’s going for KLCC PC Fair, please check the car park map. It’s very useful to plan your journey if not the best way is to take LRT but if you buying heavy and huge stuff better drive. Please car pool and safe the environment too! =)

Most importantly some ppl just go all the way there to check some of the tech updates but some go all the way there to see leng luis? ahah.

Or you looking for PC Fair job or part time as a promoter? You could easily earn up to RM100-200 per day, if you are female you could make a lot more if you become those model that holding laptop or etc. Click here to find out more available PC Fair Part Time jobs @ AsiaPartTime

Will updates more if have latest news and I will be there next Sat / Sunday @ KLCC. Who will be there next week? Maybe could meet up or something?

P1 W1MAX vs TMnet Streamyx Advertisement War

Monday, November 2nd, 2009 6,953 views

Recently P1 W1MAX launched a series of Potong / Cut campaign to boost their sales and subscribers on the usage for P1 Wimax but a lot of mix reactions from different groups of ppl. Some older generation especially women very insulting and feel uncomfortable with the potong and the phrase they used in the ads. It’s very seductive and asking ppl to cut and making ppl think in a wrong perception. Now a lot of ppl is teasing each other by asking “Have you cut?” / “Sudah potong??”. Isn’t it very wrong? Will P1 in trouble, don’t think so as the advert run for a period of time without any distraction? Read more below on some of the complain in TheStar newspaper below. Btw Potong / Cut campaign ended on 31st Oct.

P1 Potong Campaign

Potong Ads Part 1.

Potong Ads Part 2.

P1 CEO Michael Lai
P1 CEO Michael Lai

TMnet Streamyx Advertisement vs P1 Wimax

Now our biggest broadband giant TMnet come out with another fight back campaign which telling ppl why cut? It’s like a war in broadband now. Streamyx advertise in major dailies by “a guy looks like Michael Lai (P1 W1MAX CEO)” carrying a modem with the notebook outside the window trying to search for signal. It’s clear to us that it’s a fight back and want to tell us (the consumer) that P1 signal could be not as strong as streamyx and need to walk around with your modem and notebook to look for the coverage! Haha. Good one TM! Again if you hear in Radio advertisement, there’s a mother scolding her son why cut? Cut liao so slow and “Cut your head la!” “切你的头” “Potong kepala kau”… haha. Trying to record the ads but can’t get the right time to record. Lol. I got will update again, till then.

Updates: Finally got the radio ads in Cantonese but have English version too!

P1 Tagline :
Cut Already ? Cut the wires. Cut the charges. Cut the lag

Streamyx Tagline :
If it’s not Streamyx, it’s not good enough

Who might be beneficial here? I would say the advertising company and the media who publish the ads. Am I right? =)

I could help you to come out with better idea and brainstorm perhaps? Call me. haha.

Groups want suggestive ad snipped

THE “Cut Already?” P1 WiMAX advertisement has created a furore among several quarters, especially women’s groups, for its suggestive connotation, reported Nanyang Siang Pau.

Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall Wanita chief Alice Lee urged the company to retract the advertisement because it made women feel uncomfortable.

“It was done in very bad taste and is filled with sexual innuendo,” she said.

Blogger Teo Bak Kim said he was surprised that the commercial was approved when the Government was well known to be strict in advertisement regulations.

“It is vulgar and its suggestive remarks set a trap for the audience to make the negative association,” he said.

Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said she would write to the company and demand that the advertisement be pulled out.

“The company should apologise because the advertisement is insulting and it discriminates against women,” she said.

She also urged advertisement producers to be more sensitive and to stop making disrespectful commercials.

Deputy Information, Communications and Culture Minister (II) Heng Seai Kie said the advertisement was rejected by RTM for not complying with its code of content.

“It is now only allowed to be broadcast on private television stations.

“However, I have directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to study its content and see if it contains any sexual references or not,” she said.

SERVICE INTERRUPTION

Dear Valued Customers,

Referring to our earlier statement on 31 March 2009 on the disruption of our Internet services due to circuit faults on the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 3 (SMW3) cable network between Tuas, Singapore and Penang linking Malaysia to Hong Kong and Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) near Chongming, China connecting Malaysia to the United States, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) wishes to announce that there is a delay in the restoration of Internet services due to technical problems at the repairing stages.

Due to the delay, full recovery of Internet services is now expected to be on 9 April 2009.

Customers using Internet services may continue to experience slow browsing while accessing websites hosted in the US and Hong Kong. In addition, customers using other IP services such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) and other critical business applications linked to the US and Hong Kong may also experience some service degradation. To alleviate the problem, some of the links have been directed to alternate routes to ease the congestion.

TM wishes to assure its customers that it is undertaking all necessary measures to restore communications services for its customers as soon as possible.

Customers can call TM at 100 and select “Internet Services” or e-mail us at help@tm.com.my for any Internet related problems.

On Oct. 17 the Sun Will Rise Continuously for 36 Hours

Friday, October 17th, 2008 3,437 views

I have received email saying that Sun will rise continuously for 36 hours on 17 October 2008? I was curious and I did a search and found out that it’s actually internet rumor. So let’s see whether it’s true or not on October 17!

Description: Internet rumor
Circulating since: Aug. 2008
Status: False

Summary: Baseless online rumor claims “the sun will rise continuously for 36 hours” on October 17, 2008, turning three regular days into “two big days” — an event which supposedly only happens once every 2,400 years.

Variant #1:
Email example contributed by Swapnil D., Aug. 27, 2008:

FW: Sun will rise continuously for 36hrs (1.5 days)

Coming October 17, 2008 the sun will rise continuously for 36 hrs (1.5 days). During this time the US countries will be dark for 1.5 days. It will convert 3 days into 2 big days. It will happen once in 2400 yrs. We’re very lucky to see this. Forward it to all ur frenz

Variant #2:
As posted online, Aug. 17, 2008:

Coming October 17, the sun will rise continuously for 36hours (1.5 Days) In this time the US countries will be dark for 1.5 Days. It will convert 3 Days to 2 Big Days. It will happen once in 2400 years. We are very lucky to see it. Don’t miss it!

Comments: Poppycock. Let’s begin by applying some grade-school science to dispel the ridiculous notion that the sun even could “rise continuously for 36 hours.”

The reason we perceive the sun as “rising” or “setting” every 24 hours is because the earth rotates on its axis while revolving around the sun. It does not — and cannot — stop rotating, nor does its speed appreciably fluctuate (various factors such as climate and seismic events can cause miniscule changes in the earth’s rotation speed, but according to scientists all of these combined add up to a differential of no more than one second per year).

In order for a day to last 36 hours, the earth’s rotation would either have to cease altogether or slow down dramatically — neither of which ever happens, let alone once every 2,400 years. It’s physically impossible.

But you knew that, right? What you’re really wondering is where this strange idea came from.

Obscure origins of an absurd prediction

Based on the available info (of which there is very little, admittedly), my best guess is that it began as a prank, pure and simple; that it originated in India; and that the perpetrator(s) of the hoax put a great deal of effort into disseminating it.

Here’s what I’ve been able to establish:

* During a one-month period from mid-August to mid-September 2008, over 15,000 postings containing the phrase “the sun will rise continuously for 36 hours” appeared on the Internet.

* Nearly all of these postings contained precisely the same wording.

* Nearly all of these postings originated from India.

* As far as I can tell, not a single word about a October 17 being a 36-hour day appeared in any source, online or off, prior to August 2008.
