DiGi entry in mid-year may spark iPhone price war
By B.K. SIDHU
PETALING JAYA: The iPhone will be sold by DiGi.Com Bhd before mid-year and this could spark a price war on services and packages in the smartphone market.
The entry of DiGi in the iPhone space will also end Maxis Communications Bhd’s nearly one-year monopoly in the segment.
DiGi said yesterday it had reached an agreement with Apple Inc to distribute iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in Malaysia but the celco did not disclose when the packages for the iPhone will be launched.
DiGi said on its website that those already with an iPhone could switch to any of DiGi’s existing Postpaid/Prepaid rate plans.
That leaves Celcom Axiata Bhd, one of the three “big boys” in the local cellular industry, out of the iPhone race for now.
“We are open to the idea of selling iPhones,’’ Celcom Axiata chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly said yesterday. He said talks with Apple first began two years ago and the talks were still under way.
He did not give any indication on which way the talks would go but did admit that it was “not easy to sell the iPhones as we need to get a support system in place before we can do that. That is why we chose to focus on selling the Blackberry.’’
DiGi is excited about the deal with Apple as it expects the “three-year agreement will help DiGi increase sales more than 5% this year, higher than the industry average,’’ its chief executive officer Johan Dennelind told Bloomberg TV yesterday.
It recorded sales of 2% last year, slowing from 10% in 2008.
“The iPhone is fashionable and trendy. There is a large enough market out there still looking for reasonably priced packages to buy the phone. The determining factor, however, would be pricing,’’ according to a market source.
Maybank Investment Bank senior analyst Khair Mirza reckons that pricing of the device is fixed by Apple but DiGi’s ability to tap into the market will depend a lot on its positioning, “hype” and data plans.
Analyst do not expect DiGi to see a huge impact on its bottomline in the near term.
As for Maxis, the entry of DiGi appears to be a dampener as they now have to compete with DiGi, but the impact on earnings will be small, according to analysts.
Maxis declined to comment on queries from StarBiz on its iPhone sales and DiGi’s entry.
But market research company IDC claims that the celco last year sold 91,000 units since the launch in March 2009 and the shipments included both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. The iPhone is sold in 85 countries and has about 25,000 applications that can be downloaded.
A recent report released by Gartner said Apple iPhone’s sales had doubled in 2009 , with 24.9 million units sold in 2009 against 11.4 million units in 2008.
How do you solve a MYSTERY when you can’t keep track of the CLUES? How do you investigate a CRIME when you become the SUSPECT?
LING Kwong is a 40 year old, self-assured Chief Inspector of Police. He solved numerous difficult cases on his own, has a flawless track record, and is soon to be promoted to Superintendent of Police. Everyone sees him as the future head of the Hong Kong Police Force. Ling has a perfect family – a beautiful, gentle wife, a charming son and a posh lifestyle. In every sense, he is as enviable as he is successful.
His perfect life takes an abrupt turn when he wakes up after fainting in a dilapidated building, on one of his operations. He wakes to discover his short term memory damaged, and is more shocked to find his best colleague killed in the same building – BLOODY HOLES all over his body, mercilessly blood-let by an ELECTRIC HAND DRILL!
Ling’s colleague is the third victim of this series of “bloodletting murders”. Using the most inhuman means, this serial killer makes each victim witness his own slow death, in supreme terror and unimaginable pain! The extreme cruelty of the murders appalls even the most experienced policemen, and after each killing, the murderer simply disappears and leaves no trace at all to the clueless police.
At the height of his life, Ling encounters this most vicious murder throughout Hong Kong’s crime history. He must catch the killer at all costs and to avenge his friend’s death. But as Ling sift through the clues of the murders, he finds that all the evidences are pointing toward himself as the murderer! The deeper he tries to dig into the truth, the more suspicious he becomes!
All this time, Ling’s short term memory continues to desert him. He is losing the last trustworthy evidence – himself. Ling is being pushed to the edge of madness! Is he really the murderer – or not?
Asian top singer-actor Aaron Kwok plays an upright policeman who suddenly becomes a murder suspect; with emerging Taiwan actress Ning Chang as his loving, anguished but helpless wife. Watch out for this unprecedented psychological drama that treads the darkest corners of human nature – MURDERER – coming 2009.
If you have not watch it then go and have the experience it yourself and you will feel it. I have watched it and feel a bit uneasy and uncomfortable now. Don’t know how to tell the feeling.
Watch it for yourself. Some ppl complaining about the movie but I think it’s a good movie and the actors are all good! Good job. Haha. When you watch it you will feel yourself like Aaron Kwok. In the end you will really feel like “Cha do” la. In the movie there’s some funny part as well. Put close attention to the kid! That’s all I would say.
Wow, can you believe it? It’s only RM1 for Roti Canai and Teh Tarik… Where else can you get it? Now most store is selling almost double the amount, the price hike was set after the petrol increase last year but then after that the petrol price reduce they refuse to reduce, is that the way to do business? ah.. this will set another standard for other mamak to follow! It’s good for us, the consumers. Hurray. =)
KUALA LUMPUR: Fancy a roti canai and a teh tarik for RM1 – right in the heart of the city and in these tough economic times?
That is what you will get over at the Ukhwah Restoran Rakyat 1Malaysia in busy Lorong Medan Tuanku Satu (located next to Prescott Inn).
A piece of roti canai at the outlet costs 40 sen and a glass of teh tarik is priced at 60 sen.
Laughably cheap: The lunch crowd at the restaurant in Medan Tuanku yesterday and the price of a ‘complete breakfast’ in the foreground at left.
“I am happy as long as they do not increase the price,” said Marcus Wong, a customer who works nearby, who paid RM3 for a plate of chicken rice and RM1.50 for a can of Coke with ice.
His colleague C.K. Ng paid RM4 for a bowl of mixed tom yam soup and 80 sen for a glass of iced tea.
The restaurant, run by Koperasi Pendidikan Islam Malaysia Bhd, or known as Ukhwah, is not profit-oriented.
It is operated in the spirit of co-operatives – to serve people.
Ukhwah president Datuk Rahim Baba helps clear and clean the tables during peak hours since it opened for operations on Monday.
Only three days into operation, Rahim said mamak restaurants in the area have sent a clear message to him to “please maintain the market price of food”.
However, Rahim will not budge, because he believes food should be reasonably priced.
“I am still making money selling roti canai at 40 sen a piece. I make less compared to other restaurants,” he said.
The actual cost of making a roti canai is 20 sen, and by selling it at 40 sen, Rahim says he still makes a 100% profit.
On the teh tarik, he makes a profit of 18 sen by selling it at 60 sen a glass.
To break even, the restaurant needs RM2,000-a-day or RM45,000-a-month in sales to cover the fixed costs of the RM7,000 rental per month for the premises and the salary of the 16 staff members, who are all locals.
“Food is a basic need. I don’t believe one should pay a lot for food. Most restaurants make 200% to 300% profit from selling food,’’ he said.
The restaurant operations are also based on family concept.
“Everybody comes to work as a family, with honesty and loyalty in their mind. If I am short of staff, I can always mobilise others from the cooperatives to help out,” he said.
Ukhwah, which was set up in 1998, is also involved in property, finance, the pawn business and other sectors.
It now has more than 50,000 members and they contribute a minimum of RM10 a month and receive a 10% dividend on their contributions.
Its property holdings include bungalows, shoplots and condomiuums in Taman Titiwangsa, Denai Alam, Shah Alam, Sri Hartamas, Bandar Tun Razak, Bandar Tasik Permaisuri and KLCC.
Battery from RM2, Accessory Case/Pouch from RM9, Sony Ericsson Handphone from RM99, DVD player from RM99, xplod, Photo Printer, Cybershot from RM399, PSP from RM699, Handycan from RM699, Bravia LCD from RM1499

It’s seems to be good news for me but I only use RM1.60 + RM1.60 * 2 everyday to Cyberjaya so it will be RM3.20*2*5*4 = RM128 so no rebate for me. =(
Is it a good news for you or none of your business? haha. They should have just reduce the toll rate to RM1.50 at least I also can save some peanut.
The rebate is also very tedious just look at the T&C, you need to go register your Touch n’ go card and then register with litrak. Then rebate need to do it at Touch n’ go hub. Wah so many procedure and need to waste more time and petrol so is it feasible? So what if I’m using my Smart Tag with Zing Touch n’ go which is auto reload?
PETALING JAYA: Those who frequently ply the Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP) can look forward to special rebates under the newly-launched Frequent Travellers Programme.
Cash users will be given a free Touch ’n Go card worth RM15, including a RM10 load value, if they provide RM50 worth of LDP receipts collected within a month.
Existing Touch ’n Go or SmartTAG users who spend at least RM200 a month will be eligible for a free 20% reload bonus when they top up.
Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said the programme was timely given the current economic slowdown.
“This example should be followed by all highway operators in an effort to make highway users a priority,” he said in his speech at the launch of the programme read out by the ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Thomas George.
Shaziman called on all highway operators to rejuvenate the quality of service given to highway users.
Toll rates, he said, should not be burdensome and priority should be given to what users want and need.
“This will ensure that the quality of service is on par with the toll rates being charged.”
He urged operators to play a more active role in carrying out their corporate social responsibility to help reduce the burden on motorists.
LDP concessionaire Lingkaran Trans Kota Holdings Bhd (Litrak) chairman Tan Sri Dr Wan Abdul Rahman Wan Yaacob said they wanted to reduce the burden of highway users who frequently used the highway.
“As part of our corporate social responsibility, we will also be spending RM300mil for congestion mitigation work, which will begin in the third quarter of this year,” he said in his speech read out by Litrak executive director Yusoff Daud.
