Steve Jobs

1955-2011

Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs has died at the age of 56 after a years-long and highly public battle with cancer and other health issues. Steve Jobs stepped down from his role as CEO on August 24th this year following a long hiatus. The visionary leader behind the Macintosh, iPad, iPod and iPhone was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

Apple CEO Tim Cook sent an email to Apple staff, which reads:

Team,

I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email rememberingsteve@apple.com.

No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.

Apple Board of Directors:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

Steve Jobs’ family today made the following statement regarding his death:

Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family.

In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories.

We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.

Bill Gates:

I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.

Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.

The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.

Caught in LDP Jam for hours because of Litrak introduced Contra / Kontra Flow on LDP today 4.30 – 8.30pm. I feel that it do harm more than good and most of the LDP users are not aware of the Contra flow despite of all the banners being hang all over LDP but there’s no news about it and seriously causing massive jam and the situation worsen by heavy rain.

The banner informing the road user about the Contra flow “Jambatan Puchong Jaya Ditutup Bagi Laluan Kontra!”

So one of the lane being taken by the opposite traffic which causing traffic from Cyberjaya towards Puchong a massive jam! 4 lanes become 3 lanes.

Worst part is the bridge which we normally use towards the Sunway toll being closed and have to turn left.

Traffic being divert from the Sunway toll… it’s causing both side massive traffic jam!

I’m not sure why they introduced this flow as it will caused more jam for me to go home! It will be on Contra Flow daily from Monday to Friday except Public Holiday… How how how?? Gonna be mad la… What’s the alternative to LDP? MEX? KL-PutraJaya Highway? =’(

LITRAK will be introducing yet another traffic management scheme on the South bound direction towards Putrajaya between the stretch right from the Petaling Jaya Selatan Toll Plaza and Bandar Puchong Jaya (KM 19.3 to KM 22) from next week. The main objective of this exercise is to improve traffic flow in Puchong.

The Contra-flow traffic scheme being introduced in collaboration with the Traffic Police, is not new to people in the Klang Valley but this will be the first time that LDP road users in Puchong will experience it.

The Contra-flow system starts right from the Petaling Jaya Selatan Toll Plaza towards Puchong. Highway users heading towards Puchong Perdana and Putrajaya will be required to enter the lane which is located on the extreme right of the toll plaza. The dedicated lane for the contra flow is meant for light vehicles only.

The Highway Ronda team will be stationed at strategic locations and users are advised to adhere to the signages erected along the stretch to guide roads users.

The Contra-flow, aimed at improving the traffic flow on the south bound direction towards Putrajaya will involve the complete closure of the fly-over in the opposite direction towards Sunway/Kesas at Puchong Jaya Interchange to make way for additional lane to Puchong Perdana / Putrajaya – bound traffic. Thus, highway users from Puchong towards Sunway/Kesas/Federal Highway are advised to keep to the most left lanes and use the slip road right after IOI Mall.

The contra-flow will be in effect daily from 4.30 pm-8.30 pm (Monday – Friday except Public holiday) from 8 March 2010.

Speaking to reporters during the Press Conference to announce the contra-flow traffic, LITRAK Chief Executive Officer Sazally Saidi said the effort involves extensive preparation and dispensation of huge number of manpower on site.

“We have been studying this option for months now and theoretically the contra-flow should work based on the studies. We are certain that with additional lanes provided for the Puchong Perdana /Putrajaya bound traffic, the traffic flow in Puchong will improve,” he said.

He said as in any new traffic scheme, there could be minor hiccups as roads users will need a few days to get accustomed to the system.

“To a large extent, we will have to depend on the road users to be vigilant, adhere to signs posted and be at the correct lanes according to their destination for this system to work entirely,” he said.

Sazally said the contra-flow traffic system will begin on 8 March (Monday), 2010 from 4.30pm.

Bandar Utama City Corporation Sdn Bhd (BUCC) had placed an advertorial in TheStar today… So I guess it’s firm and no turning back no matter how many reasons, objections, signatures, petition also no use… So please find alternative. The road closed today itself as told.

“These pass few days, much has been said about the closure of Jalan Tanjung at Bandar Utama. We are veil now to pu the truth out there.”

After being accomadative for 14 long years, massive traffic jams has built up on Jalan Tanjung since the temporary access has simply reached its full capacity. The degradation of traffic flow has directly inconvenenienced Bandar Utama residents. BUCC has also suffered the loss of major and potential tenants deteered away from the heavy traffic traversing our commercial property at Bandar Utama Technology Park.

In this respect, the closure of this temporary access is neccessary and long overdue. As a gesture of goodwill and tp ease the transaction, we held a series of meetings with Bukit Lanjan ADUN, MBPJ officers and councilors, Tropicana respresentative and all surrounding Residents’ Associations to prepare a two-stage closure meant to provide ample time for the public to adapt to using other alternative access.

We have no other alternative but to immediately close this temporary access and have also filed in court to protect our rights. Let the due process of the court system be carried out and as such any other dealings will be deemed sub-judice.

It is with a heavy heart that we are forced to close this temporary access now.

We hope that the public understand the situation better now and that acquiring our land will not solve traffic woes. A more sensible approach would be that Tropicana undertake the social responsibility to provide additional access for their residents.

Read the story yourself. (Click for larger image.)

You could not use this road for your convenient sake anymore, please find alternative and leave it alone as it’s Private Property. Anway I think they did a good job allowing all to use the road for so many years and some ppl just take it for granted. So it’s time to wakeup!

Alternative road via Persiaran Bukit Utama or Mutiara Tropicana / Aman Suria / Taman Bukit Mayang Mas using this tunnel.

It’s seems to be good news for me but I only use RM1.60 + RM1.60 * 2 everyday to Cyberjaya so it will be RM3.20*2*5*4 = RM128 so no rebate for me. =(

Is it a good news for you or none of your business? haha. They should have just reduce the toll rate to RM1.50 at least I also can save some peanut.

The rebate is also very tedious just look at the T&C, you need to go register your Touch n’ go card and then register with litrak. Then rebate need to do it at Touch n’ go hub. Wah so many procedure and need to waste more time and petrol so is it feasible? So what if I’m using my Smart Tag with Zing Touch n’ go which is auto reload?

PETALING JAYA: Those who frequently ply the Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP) can look forward to special rebates under the newly-launched Frequent Travellers Programme.

Cash users will be given a free Touch ’n Go card worth RM15, including a RM10 load value, if they provide RM50 worth of LDP receipts collected within a month.

Existing Touch ’n Go or SmartTAG users who spend at least RM200 a month will be eligible for a free 20% reload bonus when they top up.

Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said the programme was timely given the current economic slowdown.

“This example should be followed by all highway operators in an effort to make highway users a priority,” he said in his speech at the launch of the programme read out by the ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Thomas George.

Shaziman called on all highway operators to rejuvenate the quality of service given to highway users.

Toll rates, he said, should not be burdensome and priority should be given to what users want and need.

“This will ensure that the quality of service is on par with the toll rates being charged.”

He urged operators to play a more active role in carrying out their corporate social responsibility to help reduce the burden on motorists.

LDP concessionaire Lingkaran Trans Kota Holdings Bhd (Litrak) chairman Tan Sri Dr Wan Abdul Rahman Wan Yaacob said they wanted to reduce the burden of highway users who frequently used the highway.

“As part of our corporate social responsibility, we will also be spending RM300mil for congestion mitigation work, which will begin in the third quarter of this year,” he said in his speech read out by Litrak executive director Yusoff Daud.

Toll Price gonna increased? New toll rates?

New toll rates may be deferred following public outcry

KUALA LUMPUR: A toll increase announced yesterday by the Works Minister for five major highways may be put on hold following a public outcry and the Prime Minister also calling for a review.

Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohammed had earlier revealed that toll for PLUS’ North-South Expressway (NSE), Sprint Highway, Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (Akleh), Sungai Besi Highway (Besraya) and the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) would be raised simultaneously from Sunday.

The increase for the NSE will be 5%, or 0.68sen per km. For the other highways, the increase ranges from 10 sen to 50 sen.

The increase will affect all classes of vehicles, the exception being buses on the Sungai Besi Highway.

Reacting to the announcement from Pattaya, Thailand, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi called for a review of the decision, which he said was made two or three weeks ago.

He said the Cabinet would meet today to discuss other ways to compensate the toll concessionnaires.

Under the new rates announced, the toll for the 734km NSE journey from Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah) in the north to Kempas (Johor) in the south will be adjusted to RM113.40, up from RM108, while a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh will be increased from RM26.50 to RM27.90.

Mohd Zin described the rates as minimal and hoped that the people would understand that the increases were stipulated in the concession agreements the Government had signed.

“The increase was actually due in January last year but we have postponed it until now. This means the Government has been paying compensation for 14 months,’’ he told a press conference at the Works Ministry yesterday.

Mohd Zin said the compensation amounted to RM277mil with RM177mil going to PLUS, RM38mil to Sprint and RM30mil to AKLEH.

Malaysian Highway Authority director-general Datuk Mohammed Razali Othman, who was present, said some of the concessionnaires got full increases while some only half, as outlined in the concession agreements.

“Any shortfall will be compensated by the Government,” he said.

The announcement to increase the rates comes after the Salak Jaya toll (south-bound) was abolished on Tuesday and the toll at PJS2 (Kuala Lumpur-bound) of the New Pantai Expressway was done away with on Feb 13.

Mohd Zin said the toll increase should not be politicised, stressing that it was a contractual obligation on the Government’s part.

Source : TheStar

On the same day itself, there’s another update saying that Toll Price will not be increased. No increased. It remain the same but Government would have to fork out an additional RM287mil to pay the concessionaires! Wow. Is this a good news for you? For me, I seldom use toll unless jam or what, but if they increase I will never use the toll because it’s so expensive.

Toll hike postponed indefinitely

KUALA LUMPUR: The toll hike for five major highways that was set to take place on Sunday has been postponed indefinitely.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohammed said the decision was made due to the negative public reaction and the current economic situation.

“When the announcement was made, there was negative public reaction. As a result, the Cabinet decided today (Friday) to postpone the toll hike indefinitely,” he told a press conference at the Works Ministry here on Friday.

The toll hike, had it taken place, would have increased toll rates on the North-South Expressway by 0.68sen per km; the Sprint Highway by between 30sen and 50sen; the Sungai Besi Highway (Besraya) by 10sen; the Ampang-Kuala Lmpur Elevated Highway (Akleh) by 50sen and the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) by 40sen.

The announcement met with strong opposition from consumer groups, lorry and bus associations as well as Members of Parliament from both sides of the House.

They said it was not a good time to increase toll rates considering the economic situation.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who is in Thailand for the Asean Defence Ministers meeting, had also asked for the decision to be reconsidered.

Mohd Zin said as a result of the toll hike cancellation, the Government would have to fork out an additional RM287mil to pay the concessionaires – PLUS (RM195mil), Sprint (RM36mil), Akleh (RM27mil), Besraya (RM9mil) and NPE (RM20mil) – for the period Jan 1 to Dec 31 this year.

Mohd Zin said RM245mil was already paid to PLUS, Akleh and Sprint in the form of compensation due to a scheduled increase in January last year that did not take place.

“The Finance Ministry will prepare the compensation as stipulated in the concession agreement.”

Mohd Zin said the money being used for compensation was also the public’s money that could have been used to implement other projects that could benefit the entire country.

Meanwhile, in Putrajaya, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the toll hike postponement was not meant to woo voters in the three upcoming by-elections.

He said the toll hike was put off because the public protested and was unhappy with the hike, even though the decision meant that the government would have to fork out a substantial amount of money to compensate the five highway concessionaires.

“This is not an election gimmick. This is not to attract voters (to support Barisan Nasional) and they have our undertaking that it (toll rates) will not be increased once the by-elections are over,” the Deputy Prime Minister told reporters on Friday.

Three by-elections will be held within the next few months – in Bukit Gantang (Perak), Bukit Selambau (Kedah) and also in Batang Ai (Sarawak).

The Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat fell vacant when its MP, Roslan Shahrum of PAS died on Feb 9 while the Bukit Selambau state seat is empty when assemblyman V. Aurumugam resigned on Feb 8. The by-elections for the two constituencies will be held on April 7.

The Batang Ai state seat in Sarawak is vacant following the death of its assemblyman Datuk Dublin Unting and the Election Commission will decide on polling date for this seat on March 4.

Najib also confirmed that the postponement was indefinite.

“We do not know for how long as it will depend on our affordability (to pay compensation). We will make whatever necessary decision when the time comes.

“But by not increasing the toll rates, the government has to fork out an additional RM500million a year and that is tax payers’ money,” he said.

Najib said the increase announced by the Works Ministry earlier was a “moderate increase” and the government had to pay more compensation if there was no increase at all.

“The amount will be substantial and it will add up over the years. But the public is so averse to any increase; which I understand.

“So the government decided not to increase but this means we will have to set aside more money for compensation,” he said.

On Thursday, Mohd Zin announced that road users would have to pay a higher toll when using the North-South Expressway (PLUS), the Sprint/Kerinchi/Damansara Link highways, Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Expressway (AKLEH), Sungai Besi Highway and the New Pantai Expressway (NPE).

For the PLUS highway, it was a 5% increase. This meant that toll charges from Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah to Kempas in Johor would increase from RM108 to RM113.40.

A trip from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh would increase from RM26.50 to RM27.90.

For the Sprint/Kerinchi/Damansara Link highways, it was an increase of between 30sen and 50sen.

The Sungai Besi Highway was to see an increase of 10sen, while the AKLEH and NPE were to be increased by 50sen and 40sen respectively.

Mohd Zin had said the increase was minimal and hoped the public understood that the increase was stipulated in the concession agreements that the Government had signed.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, however, urged for the decision to increase the toll rates to be reconsidered.

He said the matter will be discussed in the Cabinet meeting Friday, which will be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“People are having difficulties. The situation is not right for a toll hike. I feel that this matter needs to be discussed again in the Cabinet.

”The decision may come in the form of measures that will included in the second stimulus package or through some other measures,” he had said in Pattaya, where he was attending the Asean Defence Minister’s Meeting.
