许冠文属多栖艺人，是香港的电影导演、演员、编剧，擅长拍摄喜剧。曾演出多部打破香港卖座纪录的喜剧片，如《鬼马双星》﹑《半斤八两》及《摩登保镖》不仅创下当年香港的最高票房纪录，更掀起喜剧片热潮。他曾以《摩登保镖》获第一届香港金像奖最佳男主角奖，以《鸡同鸭讲》获美国拉斯维加斯国际喜剧电影节最佳男主角奖。许冠文的喜剧片立足于刻画小人物，富有市井气和人情味，对社会问题有一定讽刺披露，亦敢于反讽人性弱点，被称为“冷面笑匠”，是香港最重要的喜剧片作者之一。
